There are tartan mills in Edinburgh Scotland that will weave any tartan you want but I'm not sure if you can find that exact tartan in their books. I had a scarf special ordered for me while I was there, if you want to pursue that let me know and I'll get you the info.

I am debating whether to use an online MTM service such as modern tailor or indochino.  My concern is that if they don't get everything right the first time, I may not have the time to do any kind of rework.  Q3. Any suggestions on MTM sites or other 'custom' options in my price range?

Please, please give up on the notion that all your groomsmen must be in matching uniforms. I know that bridal planners like the idea, and so may brides, but none of that keeps it from being a bad idea. It is a relatively modern trend, and one which you should not embrace.

Simply make it clear to your groomsmen that they must wear gray suits and white shirts. Let them choose their own gray suits. If you really want to exercise control, specify that they be light gray. If you doubt your groomsmen's ability to find appropriate suits, give your groomsmen a list of 3 or 4 sources where such suits can be obtained, along with a few pictures of the sort of suits which would be acceptable, and emphasize to them that because suits may need minor alterations for best fit, they must purchase their suits no later than *insert date HERE*. Believe it or not, they will almost certainly look better in the wedding photos that way, than they will in matching uniform.

You can even give each groomsmen the charcoal plaid tie you like, as a gift, with instructions to wear it to the wedding.

But unlike bridesmaids, groomsmen are not supposed to all wear identical, unflattering outfits. If your bride thinks differently, explain to her why it's not necessary, and not desirable, that your groomsmen be dressed that way.

I, of course, fully expect my advice to you to be ignored. Good advice usually is.

Just learned I made it to the final round of an interview with senior partners at the firm and I'm looking to invest in a new suit that will help me look the part. I live in NYC and am about 6 foot, 235 pounds, 40/42" waist. I want something with pretty decent quality (at least that of Brooks Brothers) and am looking for a quick turnaround as I'm not sure when the interview is scheduled for but would think it might be next week. Any recommendations appreciated and let me know if you need any more info!

Thank you, I discovered that post shortly after I posted this question, but being a new member my post went to the black box and was uneditable :-)  I also have discovered the major sentiment here on styleforum regarding "matching uniforms".

Michael, I appreciate the advice.  I did not question this notion of matching as presented by my bride-to-be, but I will certainly discuss the pros and (mostly) cons of forcing uniformity on my friends :-)

 

Can either of you speak to the question about a contrasting vest?  It seems that the overwhelming majority of vests that I've seen in pictures match the suit (i.e. a three piece suit.)  Is that a fashion rule? Or is it ok to match a vest to the tie rather than the jacket and pants?

Haha, good point and I'm planning on stopping there this evening but I was hoping to get an idea of some alternatives that may give you a better value. Oh, I just found out the interview is this Tuesday afternoon.

That's very short notice for alterations. Some places may be able to rush it if it's just sleeve/trouser length issues, but that's cutting it very close... You don't have another suit that works?

If you can get an 1818 line from Brooks on sale that's all the value you're going to get for short notice. Also try Paul Stuart, just don't get anything from Phineas Cole at Paul Stuart.

While I agree that it's really quite an oversight to not have a suit around, if you have to buy one in a panic, it can be done.

But a local alteration shop that doesn't send its stuff off site (unlike most retail stores) could do a turnaround that fast in a pinch. I've had one forget to have pants done by the day on the ticket, and they were able to do it while I got a cup of coffee a few doors down. Obviously, simple alterations only- sleeves and hem. But that should do you in a pinch if you pick out the right cut.

If you need something tailored in a rush, I'd use the guys across the street from Epaulet in Manhattan.  I had them hem my pants for me within 30 minutes of dropping them off.  I'm sure they could work similar magic on other items and for other types of alterations.  Give 'em a call, shoot them the specifics and see what they can do for you.

I have a suit, but it's a few years old and I already wore it to my first round of interviews this past week. After thinking about it, I'll probably just stick with the same suit for now but instead get a new shirt and tie combo for the next set of interviews Tuesday.
