Hey guys. I'm about to order some redwing boots, but i've heard different comments on their fit. I've heard they fit large or whatever. I've worn up to sz 12 shoes, but right now i've been wearing size 11 sneakers like vans authentics. Should i go for sz 11 in the red wings? And these are from jcrew, if i use an online coupon and the shoes don't fit, am i able to exhange them in store for the right size shoe and still retain that price i paid online?

Hi everybody,

I've just joined this forum because after searching all over styleforum / the internet, I just can't find an answer to my shoe sizing question..

I've had a size 11E foot since I was about 16 (I'm 20 now), but after years of wearing normal width shoes I've come to like wearing snug shoes, both in length and in width (I also played soccer when I was a kid, which may have had something to do with it). Snug shoes just feel like I've got better control.

However, my favorite pair of boat shoes (sperrys) has become quite loose on me -- not at the vamp, where I can tighten it at will, but in the toebox. I'd bought a size 10D because I liked the way it felt, but its stretched out in width. If I move my toes at all, I hit the leather, but it just doesn't "push back" like I prefer.

My question is, is this just bound to happen with boat shoes? Will lined shoes continue to have a nice snug fit? I haven't had this problem with any other type of shoe, from dress shoes (albeit the fairly disposable, beat-around-campus sort) to sneakers. It is even normal to like a tight fit, or is the looseness of the boatshoe why everyone loves it so much (I've read something to that effect on this forum before). I wore my boat shoes with thick woolen socks to see if I could get that snug fit (or if I should get another pair of boat shoes/blucher mocs), but I'm concerned it may have stretched them out even more. Do the LL Bean bluchers stretch out a lot? I've heard the leather's sort of plastic-y, but that might be less prone to stretching...

I know this post was pretty long, but I didn't want to bother anyone with a new thread. Thank you very much!

To the extent that I understand your question, I believe the answer is yes, unlined shoes will stretch a lot more than lined shoes. It's common to prefer a snug fit through the heel and vamp, but not so much in the toe. That usually results in the kind of constant abrasion that causes blisters and such.

Some bespoke items may be successfully altered to fit someone else. They are often made with more unique fabrics than are customarily available RTW and the quality of construction is also generally superior to most RTW. Some may also find a degree of novelty in an item that was custom-made for one person in a world dominated by mass production, but that is of limited utility if the item cannot be altered to fit.

If you can afford it and are so inclined, then by all means get a bespoke suit made for yourself. Used bespoke will cost a small fraction of the original price and might fit as well as an off-the-rack suit. It's obviously a compromise. If you like the cut/fabric/details it could be worth it in some cases.

quick Q gents. I'm looking into some suedes, but as the weather isn't cooperative I figured oiled suede would work better. I was hoping to get some thoughts on these. This Loake has a goodyear welt, Distressed Oil Suede

Grenson Oscar, says Rushden Welts double leather but it's actually crepe sole

I don't like the fake distressing on the Loakes. The Grensons are okay.
Why not Clarks or the J.Crew DB?

Because with the jcrew i might as well just paypall you the money and tell you to do whatever with it, and clarks won't last me past a year. was hoping for a goodyear welt too

I am 20 years old, 5'4 1/2" and 117 lbs. Next summer I will be plummeting full-throttle into the workforce. Until now I've been able to slouch around in t-shirts and baggy cargo pants, but when I start looking at business wear I have a difficult time finding off the rack stuff that is even remotely my size. Does anyone have a recommendation, or should I just save up for made to measure?

I'm a fan of Loakes (1880 range) and am in the market for some DBs too but those by Loakes don't do it for me to be honest.

I thought Clarks DB had a good reputation for quality, not so?

They have a reputation. Quality is subjective. Decided against the Loakes, I'll consider the Grenson but the maybe when I head to London as shipping > VAT. Or I'll just snag some Aldens and not think about this for another decade.

I usually wear a size 40 41 in dress shirts
i believe that is a 15.75/16

I am looking to buy a trench, then one i am interested in
has the following measurements
i would liket to know if anyone thinks this will fit?
42R, i think i might prefer a 40R however its unavailable
pit to pit 23.5"
top of collar to bottom 49.5"
epaulette to cuff 26.5"

I know size varies, i just wouldn't like to be swimming
anyways i am wondering if anyone can describe in detail what this jacket would be like?
does the 23.5" p2p measurement mean a 47" chest?
does this mean its considered to be around an XL?
i generally wear a size Medium/Large in t-shirts.

Yes, a P2P meaure of 23.5" means a 47" chest. Giving us your t-shirt size is meaningless because you probably won't be wearing the trench with just a t-shirt on underneath. If you are a size 42 suit jacket this trench will work, if you're a size 40, you're probably going to be swimming.
