^ I wonder if this forum shares the sentiment of taking any opportunity to overdress?

No. It simply recognizes that everyone else is underdressed.

;)

Ah.

But you see tweed at night would not be overdressing to the forum. It would be lazy and sloppy and possibly gauche in a devil may care way on the right person.

Just wondering if tweed would be too twee?

Agreed, tweed would be too informal for a dinner party. But as the newbie consequently pointed out, most will think you are being over dresses, so go for it. You can secretly snicker to yourself, in regards to your slovenly appearance biggrin.gif

Is it acceptable to wear Black shoes with a dark Grey POW suit that has Brown buttons?shog[1].gif

I was thinking about starting a thread for this, but I'll try posting it here to get some ideas;

Background:
23, male, 6"1' 185,
Middle of body is in poor shape. Small gut and love handles.
Professional poker player.
Poor fashion sense (by average standards, terrible by forum standards)
Current "style" is non existent. Wear mostly low quality t shirts and shorts. flipflops to bars.

My situation:
I live in the philippines/macau currently.
I am going to Shanghai for 1 week in March-- I can buy clothes here.
I am going to the USA  in March. I will be doing a road trip in a MV across the USA selling and promoting my business that sells electronic cigarettes. (Note; I will be driving a used mini-van.)
I will be selling mostly door-to-door, in malls/public locations, and inside a casino.
I am single and busy. I enjoy getting girls, without much time or effort. (All you need in Asia is white skin. USA needs at least respectable fashion sense)
I need to give off a profession appearance
I would like to spend less than $400

Questions to Styleforum;
What shoes should I get?
How many dress shirts should I buy? What garment/style?
What types of pants should I get?
What type of belt?
Colors? Patterns? Stripes?
Any tips on keeping my wardrobe in good shape while it is traveling cross-country in a Minivan?

While you answer questions, please assume I have no fashion sense and am basically retarded when it comes to dressing myself.

Cheers

I would say yes, but it depends. What shade of brown are the buttons? Dark? Also, is it a double breasted suit having more promenient buttons?

That's what I'm doing now.

I don't expect someone to answer all the questions. Some direction would be appreciated.

FWIW, you are not going to get a wardrobe for less than $400 unless you buy used stuff.

Even if I'm shopping in Shanghai ?

Whats a ball-park figure on this list;

1 pair of durable dress shoes,
5 dress shirts
3 dress pants
3 ties
1 dress coat
5 pairs dress socks

It's a single breasted, 2 button, 3-piece. The buttons vary in shade but are generally pretty dark.

The question is so broad as to be almost impossible to answer with any specificity, but what the hell. The first three things are fit, fit, and fit. Make sure whatever you buy fits you well. That is, it is not oversized - shirt sleeves should begin at your shoulders, not droop down past them. Short sleeve shirts should go to mid-bicep, not to you elbows. Pants should be tailored to hit your shoe with little or no break - no puddling around the floor.

Basic wardrobe components: khaki pants - flat front, fairly slim leg; jeans - dark wash, straight leg; lightweight wool pants - same cut as khakis; polo shirts - fairly slim; button down shirts - sold with neck and arm measurements; lightweight blazer - blue is most versatile; a few ties - simple to start - stripes most likely; good quality brown leather shoes - lace ups and or loafers. As for colors and patterns for all this, it depends on your coloring and taste (such as it is) for these things.

Take a look at this for some shopping basics: http://putthison.com/tagged/Shopping
