I'm having trouble pairing this Banana Republic dress shirt (white with somewhat-subtle light olive green pinstripes) with a tie. I have a green/gray plaid tie but seems like too much "green." Any suggestions? Thanks fellas.
I think, given the neutral color, finding a similar color tone is going to be more important than finding a specific color to match— hence the "too green"-ness of your other tie. Dark navy would probably be safest, but other dark, solid colors would be a safe bet. A tie with a darker olive-ish base and a distinct accent color in dots or some other pattern might work well, too (or vice versa, with an olive accent to a darker base).

I have a pair of hi-shine leather oxfords which squeak when I walk. I've worn them for around 5 days and they still keep squeaking. It sounds like two bits of the hi gloss leather rubbing together, rather than a squeak, to be exact. Any tips?

what is this - a hunting jacket? a coat? it is heavily padded so does it suppose to look oversized? it looks very oversized on me in shoulders chest and waist but doesnt feel like a tent either - and too restrictive in motions in a smaller size... is it supposed to be worn over a sport coat or pullover? cant decide to keep it or send it back/ thanx http://www1.yoox.com/item/YOOX/ADRIA...N/sts/sr_men80

Post pictures with the shirt if you like. I would think just about any solid or mostly solid (like a club) tie in a complimentary color like blue or another shade of green would work. Stripes are even ok as long as the scale is sufficiently different than the shirt.

I picked up a Nervesa sportcoat from a resale shop, and it has (for me) a pretty agressive pattern. So far the only color shirt I can think to wear with it is a medium blue oxford cloth shirt with either navy or khaki pants. What other color shirts would work?

The cell phone pics aren't the best, but I included a ziploc bag box so you can get a picture of the color representation. The pattern has an orange stripe that is pretty visible from 5 feet. I was thinking about an orange shirt?

Inspired by a recent thread bemoaning the downfall of MC, I'm posting a question (1-2 year lurker, just recently signed up).

Lots of the regulars/old-timers on that thread lamented the fact that the forum has denigrated into the same old tired questions and people looking for bargains. It was also mentioned that there is a veritable goldmine of information in old threads and the archives for newbies who are looking to learn the basics of style.

They then (for the most part) agreed that if people would learn the basics and fundamentals, more high-end discussion would be able to take place.

I am somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available on the site - if I am looking to learn the basics and go back and read, where should I start?

The WAYWRN threads? The archive sub-forum? The HOF posts? There's so much out there, I don't know where to begin.

Thanks,
ACG

I'd start by doing a search on any particular topic you're interested in and checking those threads out.

Early WAYWRN threads are good as are threads dedicated to particular tailors such as the A&S expat thread or the Rubinacci thread.

This morning, grabbed a black vest from my closet and wore it out with black pants, black jacket, lavender shirt and tie. However, once I went out into daylight, realized the vest was navy!

Could the navy vest still work with the black pants and jacket if there are small navy flowers in the tie I'm wearing?

Let me get this straight; you are wearing black pants, black jacket (not a suit), and a navy vest? Forgive me, but that sounds awful.

Well, no, the vest is in the closet at work. Once I realized the mistake, I took it off as soon as I could. I don't mind the pants and jacket though.
