Hi - New guy here... Can anyone recommend a really good shoe repair shop in Washington DC? My ancient Alden 990s were turned down by the factory restoration department the other day, but I want to get them resoled anyway. Willing to pay for top-drawer craftsmanship. Thanks!

I don't know DC, but I've had some work done a B Nelson in NYC that was done well. A variety of other members here have as well (see thread below). They'll accept shoes via mail and return them to you when complete.

Bedo's in Falls Church has an excellent reputation, believe it's been discussed here and at AAAC:

back in the day, my mom took her shoes there often and raved about it. I called them recently about getting topys on a pair of leather-soled shoes, and their turnaround was too long (2 weeks!). if you're in no rush, however...

Bedo's looks good, I'll take the old boats there and see what they say. Thanks.

Ok, so I have a question, which I suspect the answer is obvious but would like to double check. Why is it that the variety of different suit labels in my wardrobe have (predominantly) two different sizes, yet they all seem to fit me fine? In half my suits I am a 50R, which I believe referees to chest measurement. However in other suits I own that fit me just as well I am a 40R. Is this quite simply a different scale used or is it a different measurement?

The larger number is European jacket sizing which is roughly 10 more than US sizing. Full details here:

If you're going to wear brown shoes with a navy suit, just how dark should your shoes be?

Across the spectrum of AE's, for instance, there's Walnut, Saddle Brown, Brown and then Dark Brown. Would you say all could work with a standard navy suit, or are some just too light (i.e. the walnut)? Ignore the shoe styles I linked, I just found random examples of shoes in those colors.

Depends on the shade of navy and why you're wearing the suit. The general rule of thumb is the darker the shade of navy, the darker the shoe. Allan Flusser types will say that the point of dressing well is to direct the eyes to the face--if your shoes call attention to themselves, then you're doing the opposite. If you're wearing a midnight navy, then a darker brown will harmonize better. Likewise, a lighter shade of navy will withstand a lighter shoe. Going with a light brown under a dark navy risks having your shoes look like beacons. But that's if you're big on following somebody else's rules. I say if you like the look, go with it.

If you go to the AE web site, there is a feature that allows you to match shoe color to different color pants. While dark brown is good with navy, I think walnut works as well.

I'd love some opinions on what color shirt to do with this tie. I've always worn it with lime green and want to diversify.

I'm ordering the orange gingham shirt from moderntailor and already envision wearing it with that and a pair of light pants for summer.

Thanks for all of your opinions.
