I just purchased this tweed J. Crew sportcoat on sale from Mr. Porter. It was a great deal, but I'm slightly concerned that the shoulder padding is too much - it is particularly noticeable when I'm sitting, as in this photo. Fit in all other areas is good. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated - I am inclined to keep it, but open to other opinions.

After my first WAYWRN post turned out horribly, I decided to take some time on the side
of study for finals to inform myself of how to better dress. The first six pictures are as close
to proper colour as I could get (calibrated monitor). I own the following shirts found below in
addition to a plain white shirt. I also own a BB red gingham tie.

I've gone through the Soporific Tie Appreciation, Pocket Squares and WAYWRN3 threads to try and grasp as much as possible.
Being a university student, I don't have tons of income to spend on ties and squares.

I've assembled a 'list' of ties and squares that I think would go well with what I have, but would love opinions.
In addition to any opinions on pocket squares (aside from white) - trying to be versatile for work in the summer as well.

L->R: Marinella(?), Hober, Panta, Hober

BB, Kent Wang

Thank you!

So I've had my eye on this sport coat for sometime and while I like it, I'm not sure what I would wear it with. It is a very unique "barleycorn" (read large nailhead) effect in blue/dark blue. I would get it if I could justify what I would wear it with. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Literally almost anything? It's a blue SC, about as versatile an item as a man an own.

Are there any rules on tucking in a sweater when wearing a SC/Blazer over it?

A relatively few men do so, at least occasionally, usually with very thin sweaters, and typically with pants having a very high rise.

The vast and overwhelming majority don't. And most would say it's a horrible look.

Whether this elevates it to the status of a rule, I can't say. I will tell you that I'd sooner tuck my chinos into my socks, than tuck my sweater into my pants.

I agree. It's like the little black dress for women (although the true navy is usually tagged with that statement). If you want to show off the jacket, go neutral with the rest of the colors like browns and tans. I think I recently saw a jacket like that pared with an olive green corduroy pants that looked pretty good. Just play:)

I have an Isaia in a similar all cotton fabric (quarter lined) it is one of my favorite summer jackets. As the fabric texture is rather uncommon in summer weight.

You will find many items to work well with that jacket - Textured shirt fabrics such as oxford cloth or chambrey combined with a silk tie and a cashmere square. Or smooth finished shirts combined with a wool tie and silk square. It's all about the mix.

Smooth finished flannel trousers or even some cords will work. Probably in brown.

I'd be putting a bid on it myself if it were my size.

I say get more solid coloured shirts (white and light blue) as well as a light blue hairline stripe shirt. As far as ties, you can't go wrong with grenadine or a lot of the stuff from marinella. I say go navy grenadine, dark brown grenadine, and burgundy grenadine (and maybe dark green)

I was wearing a pair of shoes today (AE Strand walnut) and realizing I haven't conditioned/cleaned/polished them in several weeks and they were looking a bit dull. I'm tempted to go ahead and shine them tonight, but wasn't sure if shining immediately after wear might not be the best for the leather. Thoughts?

No problem.... I usually clean & shine a little before I put them away after use... and always (almost) shine before wearing. This should answer all your questions... http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/Clothes Articles/perfect_shoeshine.htm
