Yup. Despite the old no black with brown bit, black works better with browns then it does with navies. Just not so much in reverse- brown shoes will look off with a black suit.

What is the basic difference between summer and winter ties?
I need some new ties for summer wear, but unsure what i should look for in order for them to not look so fall/winter.

He would probably need something like a 44L/XL. He might get away with buying a 44L and lengthening the sleeves and overall length. Trouser length should just be okay, as they will come unhemmed (hopefully). If not, he'll be looking for something like a 37" inseam on the trousers.

One option: Google 'how to make a pocket square'. (An SF member's web site was the first thing that popped up for me). I didn't even buy materials; just chopped up old silk, linen, and denim shirts that no longer fit, and boom -- instant pocket squares. Hell, unless you plan on offering some observant damsel your hankie, they don't really even need to be sewn.

I'm sure this violates SF policy, but whatevs. I'm not dropping over a hundred bucks for a linen PS.

This is a great forum. Thanks for the advice - lord knows I need it. I'm a cabinet maker with an appropriate wardrobe (jeans and flannel shirts) and the sartorial understanding that comes with it. I'm taking my wife to New York and for once I'd like to be seen without sawdust, glue or wood stain somewhere on my person. I had planned to wear a (for me anyway) much more usual charcoal color pant but the dark brown ones are interesting got a comment from the tailor so I thought I'd go out on a limb. I'll post a picture when I get them back and maybe you guys can let me know what you think. I've got the charcoal fall back plan if it doesn't work. Thanks again.

Thrifted a pair of navy blue cords that fit well in the waist and are appropriately slim in the leg and thigh, but I've realized that the hips are a bit too wide and give an odd silhouette. When I fold the extra fabric over a bit, the pants suddenly look much better. How costly is it to have a tailor slim, not the waist, which fits fine, but the hip area, between the upper thigh and the waist?

Reasonable question that gets looked over in this set-up.

Summer ties tend to be lighter in color (think pastels) and sometimes contain linen or cotton. Winter ties sometimes contain cashmere or wool.

mensimageconsultant pretty much has it right on. IMO a tie that captures spring/summer is something like this from jcrew

A winter tie would be a bit heavier, fuzzier, and darker with more somber patterns. Like this guys ties. Esp #15

1) Do Allen Edmonds rubber sole (Van Ness) need shoe trees? Or are shoe trees just for leather soles? 2) Also, what about Allen Edmonds Lucca "Rubber Lug" sole? Does that need shoe trees as well?

Yes. Trees are more for keeping shape in the uppers, not the soles. If the trees are not shellacked, they can also absorb some moisture.
