I was thinking the same thing until I discovered unRAID - which allows you to expand storage on-the-fly with drop-in drives - now I'm mostly convinced about going that way instead (it's licensed, but 3 drives are free, about $69 to add more) - or FlexRAID.

I've got another media center box in the living room that handles the front end DVR+multimedia stuff, this box is strictly for bigger storage and back-end stuff smile.gif

Check it out when you get ready, there are some even lower end models (N40L and N36L) that people are doing amazing things with - it's got just enough power + expandability for a killer little pre-made box (and I'm someone who's built all my own stuff for years). HP really knocked it out of the park with this for a home-server/SOHO platform, I don't see how anyone could build a closer spec box for cheaper let alone the time spent wrangling with off-the-shelf parts/drivers/etc.

Yeah, this would be very nice--it's the thing I like least about my current setup. I believe ZFS supports this natively.

I'd definitely consider something like this if I had more space. But, living in a tiny apartment in New York, I needed one box that could do it all--heavy lifting and simply serving up files. Once I leave the city, I will probably separate the concerns out. It would definitely be nice to be able to buy something small and low-powered to be the primary always-on storage server.

Revisting my last "Hurrah!" big clothing purchase for a while. Just received them today, wore them for an hour or so around the office, and they are, in a word, fantastic. fyi: I got them from member Gyasih who was generous enough to work a deal with me, I can't say enough about how well the transaction went.

Harry usually digs my new footwear, he seems bewildered with these. Finicky cat.

Was planning on buying my first home-built computer after law school. However, the video card on my desktop (now 3 years old) is dying. Was originally going to just buy the video card I'd eventually use and harvest it, but the power supply was too limited and my motherboard too old to support a proper modern card (so rather than throw away cash on a temporary fix, just advanced the purchase). Parts should arrive this week, buddy is building it for me this Sunday.

- MSI N660Ti PE 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

- MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
- CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
- Thermaltake Chaser A31 VP300A1W2N Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
- Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - OEM
- CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10
- LITE-ON DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model iHAS124-04 - OEM
- 2x extra Thermaltake AF0032 120mm Blue LED Case cooler (along with the case's base 2 fans)

I really have little need for the i7 advantages over an i5, but my dad is helping me out a bit (since I wasn't suddenly expecting to need to buy a new computer) and he's obsessed with i7's (convinced they're the bee's knees) and has always been uncomfortable with the idea of home-built machines vs. warantees from big companies. It was only like $30 more, so I'll just spend that for the peace of mind, if nothing else.

^ Building your own is fun. I've made a few over the last 15 years or so.

Definitely. I've always kept a desktop that I build myself. Rebuild it every couple of years to keep it up to date.

I guess this constitutes a buying-spree.....decided to put some of the tax return into spring 2013 stuff. hope i can get functional buttonholes done quickly (1 week?) from a NYC tailor, if anyone has recommendations? Dynasty tailors for all the alterations, maybe?

Boglioli sportcoat, striped Drakes tie, Partenopea SB cotton jacket that fits like a glove/i could sleep in it comfortably, no structure or shoulder at all yet fitted.
