I am going in December with my family and girlfriend for a small reunion/mother's 60th birthday. My family doesn't golf at all and very rarely do we have gay sex together. I can't wait. I looked online and couldn't find any cultural activities of note and few good places to eat.

Good restaurants are few and far between. Mamma Gina is probably the best, or at least the most consistently not shitty. There is a good hole in the wall barbecue place out in Indio, and some people like Murph's Fried Chickn which is at the private airport. Steakhouses are popular. If you are into naturey stuff, the living desert is a must see, but I can't remember which season is best for it. Shitty casinos seem to be in with the old crowd. If somebody suggests the Follies, just say no. If you like architecture, there is some interesting stuff. Also, there are some relatively good vintage furniture shops. The best shopping is, I guess, at the Cabazon Outlets, but it is kind of depressing.

You have no reason to go to Palm Springs.

Rich people from calgary buy places there so that they have somewhere warm to go that isn't too far away (no connections, etc). So you're forgetting:

d. Cowboys.

There isn't much going on in Palm Springs except for spas and golf. I think Cabazon is pretty good for outlet. I've always found some good things there.

The very best "fine dining" restaurant in Palm Springs is Johannes, in my opinion.

If you're into old-school pizza, try Livreri's.

Tyler's is great local burger spot worth checking out. I saw Huell Howser the last time I went there. I believe he matches categories b and c in Conne's chart above.

So there is not even the tacky/retro/kitsch appeal? I thought that factor along with some good museums/food would make it more interesting but it sounds like it is just going to suck.

There is some, but, for better or for worse, it tends to cater to a very gay crowd. Palm Springs is great for golfers, gamblers, old people, gay people and college fraternity types. For the rest of the wrold, not so much.
