Resting

Every good trainer/runner will tell you that resting is an important part of your training regiment. You don't want to over train and work yourself to a point of exhaustion. How do you guys handle rest days? How many do you take per week? Do you have a few times a year where you will abstain from any physical activity for more than two days in a row?

My basic schedule now that work has begun in earnest is:

90 minutes soccer on Sunday
3-6 miles on stationary bike (med to high resist), weights in gym (45 minutes) Monday
50 minutes soccer Tuesday
7-10 mile run Wednesday/or Tues gym routine
7-10 mile run Thursday
REST-Friday
Tuesday gym routine + 3-5 mile run Saturday

I don't actually have a schedule rest day. I basically just listen to my body, and if its asking for a rest, I give it. Usually, after a decent run 6-8 miles, I give my body a rest the next day and do some weights (20 mins) or just go for a walk.

In "Extreme Alpinism" by Mark Twight (the gym jones guy), he suggests using a heart rate monitor and taking your waking pulse every morning. Once you know your normal waking pulse range, anytime you see a morning a few beats above that, it means you're pushing too hard and need to rest.

I've tried it, and it seemed to work pretty well because I could train more than I thought possible. Sometimes going off of "feel" leads you to be lazier than necessary.
