I really don't understand some of the criticisms in this topic here. What is wrong with seeking obscurity? Do we on here not do that? If you ask me the whole idea of even caring about clothes seems a bit hipster-esque.

To be honest the whole hipster thing has so many parellels to prior subcultures like skinheads, mods, punks; it is the same damn thing packaged in a different time period. And yet this article paints the picture that this hipster movement's only concern is vain aesthetic; is this not the same as the former ones?

Why is there this angst against fixed gear bikes? Who gives a fuck; personally I respect those who "adopted the fixed-gear bike as the only acceptable form of transportation" because it is a fucking workout. Yes I have one, but usually I just use my roadbike. Is it so "hip" to give a damn about the environment that one should not out of fear of being called a hipster?

Am I a hipster for doing black room photography? Am I just a fagot trying to play the irony card, should I catch up with technology and go digital? I guess everyone on here who loves nice leather shoes should emerge into the 21st century and by a comfort shoe.

"the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather that creating it" --sounds like styleforum, but wouldn't it almost be hipster-esque to make your own clothes? I mean a sweatshop kid can make that shit for cheap. Anyhow I know some "hipsters" who are damn good artists.

yes you are. fagot!

Fools!! The article was just a skillful ploy to advance the end of history agenda, otherwise why would anyone publish that article in 2008 instead of 2004 (at the latest).

You care way too much to be a hipster - Pro-tip: just subtly insult someone's taste in music and/or fashion, then stalk out in a huff. Don't let 'em see you cry, bro.

So I agree with you in that regard, but I don't think it's limited to hipster culture.

Well said. You are right. However, there is at least one exception to the idea of the unattractive-looking subculture: mods. The movement probably got as big as it did, and is remembered fondly by many, because of the number of attractive adherents and some aesthetic elements of the clothing. One should wonder whether, aside from friendships gained, subcultures that are heavily reflected in style hurt their adherents in terms of professional success and perhaps romantic success.

+ 1

In addition, fixed geared bikes are very popular amongst winter commuters (no sludge/ice in the derailleur).

If you browse FixedGearGallery.com, you'll see a few hipster-types .. but for the most part, you'll see normal cyclists (not too many elite roadies) who enjoy beauty and simplicity of bikes in general.

And it's not killer on the knees if you have a decent gear and have your bike setup right.

Does anyone know why adherents to most modern subcultures almost always look unathletic? For example, do they attract people who aren't built much like the ideal and generally dislike exercise and in turn are hostile to individuals who are body-conscious?

If you're a hipster you can't care about such things as being a big meaty exercise person. They are definitely body conscious, however they use laziness, vegetarianism/veganism, nicotine and cocaine to maintain their body style.

I think you're basically misreading hipster looks. Heroic-chic has been cool for what, 20 years now? The aesthetic and surface elements are at least as important as with guidos and other NJ luminaries. Have you looked at a fashion editorial recently?

Who will be Rorty's successor in defending us from this abomination?

There's been some talk about things that are blue collar being ironic? What if you are blue collar? I took a two and a half year hiatus from school when all my friends were still "grinding" (aka failing miserably). Did the whole hipster thing grow out of all kids having to go to school either to get a "good job" or because their parents said so or both? I can't help but feel that if there were more young, blue collar men and women there wouldn't but so many damn "blue collar" hipster trends deemed ironic.
