While my knee has been healing from an MCL sprain and screwed up kneecap (torn retinaculum and cartilage), I've been trying out different things to keep my cardio up and avoid getting totally fat. It's been a struggle to find something that gives a decent amount of cardio but does not require a lot of knee movement.

One of the things I had been doing is shadow boxing and bag work, but I find that I would get bored easily and often got into a rut of repeating the same combos. So I bought the Bas Rutten MMA workout CD set and like it a lot. The CDs have tracks where Bas calls out combos and strikes for either two minute or three minute rounds with one minute rests in between. There are separate CDs for boxing, thai boxing, all-around fighting (adding sprawls to the striking) and all-around workout (punches, kicks, sprawls, and neck and abs exercises for 28 minutes with no break). You can do them as shadow boxing, on a bag, or with a partner using focus mitts.

I haven't been able to do the all-around fighting or all-around workout tracks due to my screwed up knee. But the boxing CD is actually a pretty good cardio workout on its own, especially against a heavy bag, which helps you to consistently apply power. I've been doing the workout against a BOB bag, which moves around more than I'd like, but helps me with targeting.

Just curious if anyone else has tried these CDs or something similar. I'm still trying to find the ultimate knee-free cardio workout. It's been more than two months since I got hurt, and I'm kind of bummed that I haven't healed enough to get back into my training routine.
