banks, just curious... is it for medical reasons that you're looking for a particular climate? if not, i'd say you are way too young to be picky about where you are going to live. at your age you should be following your best carreer opportunities wherever they may lie. save the climate concerns for your retirement. i hate cold weather but if someone offered me my own five star restaurant in new york, i'd take the opportunity without caring that i'd be freezing half the year. btw, i've been to texas and i hated it. it's way too hot, all the food was fried, and the women are fat.

MatadorPoeta, it's not really for medical reasons(though I'm tired of the cold). I just thought that I might like to find a nice place to live before the age of 55-60 and do sooner what people usually put off until retirement. I would be willing to relocate to Switzerland, the UK, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Australia, etc. if a good job is available there, though long-term I would rather stay in the States. Regardless of where I work, though, I would like to find a nice "permanent" home somewhere desirable in the next few years.

Your argument regarding capitalism and employment assumes that workers have no freedom to walk away and find work elsewhere, as they do here in the U.S. If someone living in the most free and wealthy country in the history of the world allows themselves to be "exploited" by an employer, they have deeper personal issues that you and I are not trained to help them address. Literally billions of people around the world would kill (or risk being killed as they do every year trying to get into the U.S. for a better life) to be so lucky as to be in their shoes. Let's not make excuses for them.

FCS, certainly. I'm in Chicago. As for job inclinations...I've never been settled on one. I decided to avoid trying to settle on one since many old classmates tried and went mad in the process. I thought that I would just finish college and, along the way, figure it out. This is a good strategy or a bad one depending on the possibilities. If there's a possibility one might want to be an engineer, majoring in something in liberal arts isn't going to do much. I don't know that medicine is my calling. If I wanted to I could take pre-med courses and the MCAT and apply to medical school, but really, the idea of at 4 years of medical school plus residency, internship, etc. don't appeal to me since I'd be ~30 before I would really be working. Additionally, I may have little say in where I work, depending on where there is a need for certain specialists. If I'm on call I have to go whenever the call me, in the middle of the night. Managed care complicates things. Malpractice insurance is high. I was "manually inclined" earlier in my youth. My father thought I might make a good surgeon. From the time I was a toddler(literally) I learned things about cystoscopies, ESWL, etc. Automobiles also fascinated me. I spent a lot of time sketching automobiles from whatever ideas flowed from my head. I'm to graduate from college soon. I'm in the college of liberal arts. One of the possibilities, career-wise, might be something automotive-related. I might be stuck with office work initially at least. To do anything technical I may have to return to do a B.S. in engineering, or otherwise teach myself whatever I can, and learn from co-workers in R&D. General Motors' Bob Lutz has enjoyed being a part of the design process, despite being an executive. To advance and not be at the mercy of management it would be a good idea to get an MBA. Maybe a JD, and I could serve as counsel. I've wondered about being an agent, representing people in contract negitiations. I'd probably at least have to begin with an established firm such as IMG, SFX, Leigh Steinberg, etc. Then there's non-profit work. Im summary, I'm confused. Thoughts on all this?

The fact that some authoritarian state calls itself "communist" does not make it so. North Korea, as you call it, is, after all, properly called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Should one condemn democracy on that basis? To dismiss communism on the basis of what has happened in North Korea, or in Cuba, or in the Soviet Union is pure sophistry. Study Marx and learn that "communism" in the sense in which the term was meant to be used has never existed. Don't believe the hype, yo.

I actually agree with MikeF. Communism, in its true form, has never existed. Nor will it ever, in my opinion. I'm afraid capitalism is the best we mortals can do.

verogroup, i can't comment on the north koreans, but i must say something concerning cuba. prior to the communist revolution, cuba was 10% white and 90% black. the whites were the land owners and the middle-class (doctors, lawyers, merchants, etc...). the blacks worked the fields and nothing more. they did not go to school, and they were essentially slaves. if you ever happen to notice the cubans in miami who have so much hatred toward castro, they are white. they are the descendants of the privileged class who oppressed the blacks for their own selfish gains. the older generations in cuba love castro because they rememnber how things were before him. nowadays, everyone in cuba knows how to read, everyone recieves free healthcare, and no one starves. the fact that they don't have dvd palyers or drive brand new cars is not an acurate indication of the improvement in their quality of life after the revolution. yes, history books are good, but remember that they are rarely objective. the average american high school history book is clearly biased toward a pro-american view of history. i didn't mean to hijack this thread, so don't even get me started on how the u.s. assasinated the democratically elected communist president of chile, salvador allende.

Wow. I'm dumbfounded that anyone in this day and age could defend communism -- even in it's purest form -- as a viable alternative for the governance of humans. In my book, it is simply the worst that humans can do to each other short of genocide. FREEDOM from government coercion to all, I say.

We're just not evolved enough-yet- to practice communism. Everyone has been bred into this culture of fear, that there isn't enough for all- so I've got to get mine. Part of the myth that we're all separate when we're really one. (OOPS- I'm hijacking the thread, too, and attracting flames from libertarians and republicans- sort of trolling I guess. Perhaps I should ban myself )

About Communism, even if the original ideas aren't flawed, there is an almost nil possibility you could have them implemented. So is the pure free market, where all firms earn ZERO economic profit. Since we cannot test both hypothesis in their purest forms, what we can test, and ultimately judge, is the application of the ideas (ie. how policies are shaped and implemented based on such) and to what extent they better the welfare of the masses. Without saying, so far zero score to the communist front.

Steve, my political / economic thought is probably what you could call a hardcore conservative, but by and large no way I could adhere to the Republican Party, at least under the current leadership. Of course there are some good people within the GOP (McCain seems to be one), but the current administration is a bunch of pork-barrel spenders. Also, being pro-market is NOT the same as being pro-business. And I'm still not ranting about foreign policies yet.

What do you think communism in its "purest" (or rather, only) form is? Again, I advise you to read Marx. If you think communism means government coercion, you're reading from the wrong book.
