I usually wear a 36 -- I tried on a pair of Jil Sander pants in a 38 and they were still too small. Â I guess that means that they're slim cut - to me it means they were mislabelled...
Were you going by the converted Euro size? I've found Euro sizing to be all over the place, I'm a 31/32 but wear anything from 46-52 depending on the manufacturer (though I would say 50% of the time, I'm fine in a 48). IIRC Euro sizing is based more on the diameter of the hips, and not the waist, which explains the different sizes somewhat. Back to the original topic, define "fit me perfectly". Are you looking for something loose fitting with lots of freedom of movement (like Bills Khakis)? Superslim and form fitting (most designer stuff, and the two you metion, Helmut Lang and Dior Homme, are typical of this style)? Somewhere in between (not too loose but not too tight)? Short of trying on lots of pants, if you want to evaluate the cut of the pants, fold then in half lengthwise, bringing the pockets together, with the fold at the fly. This way, you can instantly see how much material there is at the hips and thighs, the length of the rise, taper of the legs, etc. If you have a favorite pair of pants, do this and use it as a mental reference when looking for other pants.
