American truffles

there are a few types of "American" truffles out there - the ones I have seen are Georgian and Oregon. Anybody have any opinions on them? I would like to buy some truffles when the season comes around, and I am not sure I want to deal with the low value of the dollar and also the whole smuggling something so smelly through customs this year.

No flavor. Or maybe they have improved. But my earlier experiences were not good.

Only the real deal from France or Italy are really worth buying, correct?
I know there are also some from Asia, that are not worth using.

Save yourself some money and buy the real deal instead. The American truffles just do not have the flavor of the black or whites from Europe.

Think of it as a real treat.

They're still pretty much the same.

Yes, and the winter harvests tend to be the better ones. Last year's were really good.

Summer truffles suck. They look the same, but that's it.

Are the Georgia ones just a byproduct of good ole boys driving around in fields in the middle of the night looking for shrooms?

It probably used to be back in the 50's and 60's, but it's a legit crop now. The Oregon and Georgia truffles are entirely different species though, and while they don't have anywhere near the same flavor as the European varieties, they're okay for infusing oils and adding to things like sauces. I still wouldn't buy them though.

oh, well, worth asking. I get to a trade show in Europe every year around truffle season, and this year I might bring a small batch back. just enough for a meal or two. I think that my wife hasn't had truffles in 4 or 5 years.

Save your self the money on the black truffles as well. They are cheaper than the white but not as good a value proposition.

I'd rather have a white truffle feast once every five years than eat black truffles once or twice a year.

Just my opinion.

Supposedly the Asian truffles aren't real truffles. They look and smell similar, but taste like shat.

For us food snobs they're not, but from a biology view they are.

Christ, I've learned more about food from this forum since I started at school than I have from my instructors.

I wish I'd have known this would happen before I dropped all this dough.

Boy, you're a real truffle snob

To us regular truffle folks, the black ones are fine.
