mood lighting

since i don't have a dimmer, i want to be able to turn the lights on and still have it dark enough to set the mood when entertaining. i'm considering buying some colored lightbulbs for my apartment. g.e. sells what they call 'party lights' that come in blue, pink, etc... what do you think? i might just buy some along with the standard 25w soft light to see what works. the color might look cheesy.

Sounds kind of cheezy. I've seen projects where people put rope lights hidden in the moldings or under a bar or something. That can look very nice and dramatic. The key word is they have to be hidden.

i know it sounds cheesy. it's something i would have done when i was 20. the thing is i only have 2 light sources in my living room and they are both too bright, even when one is off. my floor lamp has a 150w bulb in it so i'm going to swap it out for a regular 25w and see how that works, but i'm curious if anyone here uses the other colors.

I can't STAND mood lighting, especially in restaurants. I love bright restaurants that feel nice and airy and I can see what's in front of me.

For some inexpensive (and usually) non-cheesy looking options, browse Ikea. I purchased under-cabinet lighting for our kitchen. I was very moderately priced, easy to install, and really looks good when you don't want a bright overhead on.

I agree, we did the same thing in our kitchen.

I personally don't see mood lighting as being cheesy, however I would suggest you just stick with basic white lighting, otherwise your place will look like something off Miami Vice. This type of lighting looks best when somewhat hidden from sight, i.e. bookshelfs, in an entertainment center, etc.

+1. Also, dimmers are easy to install.
