FWIW, I've heard very good things about the Canon Eos Rebel Xsi. I'm not a camera person but its been recommended to me several times.

Get a 20D or 30D on ebay, craigslist, or keh.com (keh is awesome), and then stock up on good glass. Canon's 50mm f1.8 is a great buy--don't waste your time with the kit lens.
The kit lens makes a decent walk around lens, however the prime 50mm lens should definately be the 1st lens to consider adding to ones collection. The f1.8 is outrageously cheap ($80 bucks) and offers sharp pictures. The f1.4 is even better, and offers better build quality, but for the price of the f1.8....if it breaks, you can easily buy a new one.
