I bought three suits made by Alexandre of Savile Row about 2 1/2 years ago in Chicago at Marshall Fields before it became Macys. Does anyone know if they're still around and have opinions about their suits? Thanks. TBP

For all I know they could very well have boutiques. The suit have working buttons on the sleeve and hand stitched lapels. Beautiful lining as well. TBP.

They have a boutique on Savile Row in London. They also apparently did some MTM on US army bases (?) and it was said to be of good quality. Owned by BMB, a big British retailing group. Quality is OK; all the customers who weighed in from the States were happy with them. Not a historical tailor, but another new-ish outfitter/designer. Styles advertised are on the flashy side (sometimes velvet collars, covered buttons, that sort of thing).

Excellent staking out of both sides of a position. Unfortunately, pick stitching can now be machine faked and working button holes appear on some cheap ass suits. These are no longer necessary indicators of quality.

A simple google search reveals the following information

They still have kiosks in some military exchanges. I haven't bought, but the quality appears ok. Fabric is good, they make in Eastern Europe and the suits I saw were fused. They were priced around $700 to start and based on what I've learned here, I can find better suits on sale that fit as well. YMMV

Bumping this to ask a question... how are the prices on these in the UK compared to Chicago? I got a wool-linen suit in Chicago last spring and it fits me quite well.

In the UK the OTR stuff in department stores is normally in the £500-600 range at full retail (sale prices typically halve that). Not sure on prices in Chicago...

Alexandre is just another brand of the Baird Group - http://www.bmb-group.co.uk/alexandre-savile-row.asp. The Alexandre store in Savile Row was turned into a poof's boutique. It failed miserably and has been recently changed into a Ben Sherman MTM store (another Baird brand). The west side of the Row (with the honourable exception of Davies & Son) is full of crap Chav brands like Ozwald Boateng and Gary Anderson. They are probably trying to attract the moronic masses queuing for Abercrombie & Filth.

I've been increasingly desperately trying to find a cheap DJ for an event in 2 weeks and just won this Alexandre one on e-bay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT If the seller has got the back length measurement right it will be too short for a classic fit. It is also the only peak lapel one button DJ I have found in 38r in 2 months of intensive local (provincial) shopping and e-baying. It seems the low cost DJ market is 90% notch, 8% shawl 1% DB and 1% 2 button peak... Despite the mixed reviews of the brand I think it was worth a gamble.

I saw that last month -- made me cringe and giggle. The idea of going to the Row to have Ben Sherman "make" a suit for you is wonderfully tragicomic -- or more likely comedicotragic.

FYI, machine made suits now have working buttons. Those are no longer a sign of a true bespoke.

Am rather sceptical and shun the boutiques. Instead, even Ebay has some deals with real hand-stiched bespoke suits with floating canvas etc at a fraction of the price of some hyped up junk. Sorry, don't want to offend anyone. (I'm a lousy buyer and recall the first MTM stuff in "Thai silk" aka polyester. Warts appeared on these pants within days... And cloth made from a sack couldn't lose shape more quickly...)

Just trying to get quality cloth in SE Asia isn't that easy, unless one goes to a high end shop like NARIN COUTURE in Bangkok. But then the suit won't be cheap.
