Paul Butterfield

I recently came across some live Paul Butterfield shows (couple at the Fillmore in the mid-60's, one with Rick Danko and Levon Helm in 1985) and it has reaffirmed my long-held belief that he was the greatest white man to ever play the blues. I really can't think of anyone who matched Paul's abilities.

East West and The Resurrection of Pig Boy Crabshaw are both phenomenal.

I have heard so much about Crabshaw but I still haven't bought it. I'm going to put East-West on in a minute and jam out.

PB was great. But don't forget Mayall. After all, he introduced so many great talents who went on to their own careers -- Clapton, Beck, Peter Green, et al.

Could you tell us where to find this?

Wow, flashes from the past; two more for consideration......John Hammond and don't forget the man, Mose Allison!

I saw the Butterfielf Blues Band many times, great music.

Google Michael Klenfner. He was my Lincoln HS buddy and became Clive Davis's right hand man. He started out as a bouncer at the Fillmore East.

Today Mike is known as "The Consigliere of the music industry".

He and I used to ride in to Fillmore shows in his VW bug.

That's awesome, you're a lucky guy. I would kill to see Butterfield in concert.

We didn't have to kill.

Mike K was working for Billy Graham and got me into the Fillmore East shows for free.

Mike K. went on to much bigger stuff but I'm happy in Texas.

I really have to add this. Sent it to rnoldh because it's a really remarkable video. Here, Paul is one or two years away from his untimely death...he was only 44 but looked at least 55, maybe 60. His abuse of drugs and alcohol really took a toll. But amazingly it did not effect his voice or harp skills...at about 3:10, he begins his verse in "The Sky is Crying" (with Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and BB King) and the crowd goes nuts. He just puts his heart and soul into it. Butterfield is god!
