Binoculars

I'm thinking about purchasing a small pair of binoculars, mainly for use at ASU football games as I'll be sitting in the upper deck this year.

Anyone have any suggestions on power, brands, etc?

Try these ones, made by Leica:

I have owned them for years and I can recommend them without any reservations. They are compact, powerful and reassuringly expensive.

Yeah, they might swing in that direction once in a while

One drawback of finishing my MBA is that my seats are no longer in the student section. That's where I sat last year and it was pretty sweet.

Here's are some nice examples...

Not sure what your price range is but the "big three" german brands (Leica, Zeiss and Swarovski) all make very nice small (and large) binoculars. Zeiss Classic are probably the least expensive compact in this group starting at around $350 for the 8x20 model. Leica Ultravid Compact is very nice but about $600 for the 8x20 model. Some less expensive decent glass is made by Nikon, Minox and Pentax. Since you will be hand holding these you should probably look for magnification around 7x, 8x or maybe 10x, though with 10x there may be excessive shake unless you brace your arms on something.

Wow - those are all very nice.... and expensive.

I guess I should have expected this, but considering that my tickets only cost $149 for the entire season, my price range for binoculars is more like under $100.

Anyone have any recommendations more in that range?

Thanks!

You should ask the guy from Crane's. I haven't checked their website, but it seems like their kinda thing. Also, let me ask my dad tomorrow and see what he says. I know he used to have a pretty extensive bird-watching hobby, so I'm sure he knows of some decent binos.

We've purchased binoculars, telescopes, and night vision items over the years from Orion. They started as a tiny little place on 17th Avenue in Santa Cruz and now have huge facility in Watsonville. Their warranties and customer service are second to none in our experience. There are several models from them in your price range.

I'm pretty happy with my Steiner birding binos, not as expensive as Swarvoski and the like but for that sort of "birdwatching" I'd go with a Bushnell Binocular/Digital Camera. Don't forget to post pics here.

Get Steiner, they're indestructible...
