Wine from Boxes??? - Page 2

Man, even Piobaire isn't with me on this one. Well, LK, I guess it's just you and me against the barbarian hordes. It's just one of those presentation things that are lost with the ever-encroaching hordes of efficiency and cost-cutting. Maybe a box/tube/whatever is more practical, but it's not romantic. It has, to put it bluntly, no style, like espresso in paper cups, clip-on bowties, etc.

I completely hear what you are saying Augusto and I am by no means against you. I'm mostly speaking from personal experience-- most of the time if I am going to have a few glasses of wine over the weekend I have a bottle and during the week I may open a bottle one night and re-cork it and finish it later. But as M@T said, the box is fairly practical. It's never going to be "the same" and I definitely know that.

I'm not against you either. There's also no romance in $15 bottle of wine IMO. Have no fears I'm about to empty my cellar and the next pic of the inside will be merely boxes stacked up! I'm 100% with you part of the mystic of wine has to do with old dusty bottles. It's just that most wine is meant to be drank in the short term, and for that, I'm fine with the efficiency of the box. I will give up drinking vintage port if they start putting it in boxes though!

I made a thread on this a few months ago, not sure why it's not appearing in the related threads, but I have tried some of the new boxed wines and they are great. I compared it to several more expensive bottled wines (still budget bottles mind you, but more expensive than the cost of the box wine) and the box wine won against each bottle. Bottom line, if you just love the act of uncorking a bottle, then they are not for you. Obviously, you can't uncork a box. But, if you understand why leftover wines go bad, why a significant cost of wine is in the bottling and the shipping of said heavy glass bottle, then you might appreciate some of the new boxed wines. They work especially well for people who like a glass or 2 a night and would take several days to finish a bottle. The wine I tried was Black Box Cab. It cost $19.99 for 3L, the equivalent of 4 bottles. I finished it over the course of a month and it did not go bad.

It's too bad your thread is not in related threads because I think you do a good job of summarizing why I am in the pro-box group.

There are a lot of pretty decent and drinkable (in my very humble opinion) wines now available in a box. I occasionally enjoy a glass or two of wine during the week, but I do so without any real regularity-- I might have two glasses on a Monday night and not have another drop for a week so for me, it's nice having something that remains basically good without having to worry.

I guess I can see the point that there are 1000s of wines that are not worth the cost of bottling, shipping, etc.

I do support the screw-top thing, since corks probably do more damage than good at this point.
