I had an inguinal hernia repair at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem in 1982. I was in the hospital for 3 days and had general anesthesia for the surgery. I was nearly 22 years old at the time and remember actually crying from the post-op pain. The morphine they gave really helped though! These days, in the USA, the surgery is usually done as a same day procedure (outpatient).

I became aware of a problem when I was around 12 years old. There was something slightly protruding into my scrotum that was not supposed to be there. It tended to go away when I lied down and sometimes was not even apparent when I stood up. Initially I though maybe it was cancer, but decided not to tell anyone; I figured the cure would be worse than the disease. By the time I was in my mid-teens and was a bit more medically savvy, I realized it was an inguinal hernia and I probably wouldn't die from it. I still didn't bother to do anything because it wasn't really causing any discomfort and was often not even noticeable. By the time I finally decided to have it repaired, I was experiencing occasional discomfort and I figured my luck may run out and I could end up with a strangulated loop of bowel.

yes, this is pretty close to my experience. I put on a bunch of weight basically by laying down for a week, being fed junkfood all day by the girlfriend and the maid, and not being able to get up at all to expend any of that energy, nor pass it through the system at all. Basically I spent a week watching DVDs being waited on hand and foot by two women, and being fed pizza and soda all day. It would have been close to how I picture heaven if not for the insane pain in my crotch.

I had a hernia that I did not have repaired for many years (no health insurance), and it really didn't bother me in terms of pain. However, over time the tear in my muscles got bigger and bigger, and by the time I did get it repaired my samll intestines literally were in my scrotum when I was standiing. If I lay on my back I could push everything back in place and feel the hole in my abdominal wall, and when I stood up everything would slide back out like spaghetti (sounds gross huh?).

When I finally did have the repair done it was no where near as bad as I expected. I had a traditional mesh repair done, went in for surgery in the AM and was home resting by 3pm that day. The first few days were pretty painful but I was back to work in a week, and I haven't had any problems with the repair in the almost 10 years since it was done. I only wish I had done it sooner, don't be scared and put it off.

How much does it cost?

When I had it done, I was a student at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. While I never took out Israeli citizenship, I was on an A-1 (temporary resident) visa that entitled me to be on one of the national healthcare programs. As a student, I paid only $5.00 a month for the coverage and never even saw a bill for the surgery. Israel has great healthcare. The hospital was as good as anything here. The only down thing is some lack of privacy. I had 2 other people in my room (both Palestinians); I am just grateful they weren't ultra orthodox Jews! A rabbi came to "visit" me and show me how to use tefillin; I quickly threw him out. That got both of my roommates laughing.

I am resurrecting this old post because I think I may have given myself a hernia. Two days ago I was doing tabata squats with 20 lb dumbbells in each hand. I hadn't done tabatas in a while (as many reps as you can do in 20 seconds of squats and shoulder press - then rest 10 seconds). I didn't feel any pain or anything weird during the exercise or the whole rest of the day.

The next day I woke up my left nut hurt really bad - like that feeling when you've slept on it weird. By mid-morning my nut still hurt. I started feeling around to see if it was twisted or something, and I found out that the pain wasn't really in my ball, it was in my abdomen just above and to the side of my package.

The rest of the day it hurt a little when I would walk and sometime just when I was sitting down and not moving. There isn't a bump or anything and I don't feel a hole. I woke up this morning and it hasn't really hurt as much as yesterday. I still feel a slight burning or really dull pain just sitting down, but there wasn't any pain when I walked the dog.

I reeeeaaaaally hope it is just a pulled muscle or something because I dread the surgery and 8 weeks of being out-of-commission physically.

Sooo...the last time it hurt was Monday. It would hurt when I was just laying there not moving. Then, when I decided to run around a chase the dog outside, no pain at all. Still no bump. Tuesday I had no pain at all. Nothing. Today (wednesday) I have had no pain. I even swam for half an hour.

If I still don't have any pain tomorrow I am chalking it up to a pulled muscle. I really hope the pain stays away and I can go back to 100% intensity. If pain recurs, I will go to a doc asap.

You guys need to stop leading sedentary lifestyles and eating wheat gluten, which weakens visceral muscle fibers and increases stores of visceral fat. Cut out wheat from your diet and get more exercise.
