Stylish baseball cap? (I know- oxymoron)

Thread Starter
I am gradually adding to my hat collection, by necessity. My almost-bald head burns to a crisp in the summer and freezes in the winter. I have a few cool hats, but sometimes I need something quick and simple that I can just throw on and not look too contrived.

So I keep thinking about the classic baseball cap, which I tend to have negative vibes about, just due to their total overuse. But if I could find a good quality one, with a nice cut, maybe that's fitted to my big head, and is free of any logos or text, I'd consider it.

(Coincidentally, I was watching the Olympic swimming tonight, and they showed Kobe Bryant and Lebron James entering the swimming building to watch Michael Phelps. One of the two, I forget who, was wearing a really cool cap. I just caught a quick glimpse of it. It had a really nice simple design and stitching. Wish I knew what it was.)

Any suggestions on nicer baseball style caps? Maybe with a bit of a "vintage" flavor? I strive for a basic classic workwear look, and am 40ish.

Thanks!

David

Nothing wrong with wearing caps. If you can find a nice one that adds to an outfit, why not wear it? I admit I see a lot of gaudy-looking crap out there but there are a lot of simple, understated caps with or without designs that can add to an outfit. At least that's my opinion. I know a lot of people (especially on this board) hate on them, but just to not wear one because a few people may roll-their stuffy eyes is myopic. Being 40 this may be a little harder to pull of but I wouldn't limit yourself because of age: I just sold a pair of NDG slim grays to a 65 year old man.

+1. A friend of mine has a Braves hat that he has been wearing for 10 years and it truly looks amazing. It started out navy blue but has gotten so sunfaded that it is now a pale gray and has all sorts of wear on it. I don't wear baseball caps, but if I did, I'd want to rock them like this guy.

I think NDG actually looks awesome on older guys.

But neverless the point being a 65 year old man in slim grey jeans is going to make some kind of statement, though I'm not sure what.

Engineered Garments has some nice caps that you might like. The ones for F/W are wool I believe.

They used an older model in their last season's lookbook and he looked pretty good in their stuff.

The illustrations are a bit off-putting, but I have a couple from www.ballcap.com. They make authentic repros of pretty much every baseball cap ever, and they're really well done. You can customize to an extent as well. I think they're even having a sale right now.

bro i hear ya... im follicly challenged myself. i used to be kinda pissed about it but now i figure its just an excuse to wear cool hats lol... but bro please i just dont think baseball caps are very cool at all.. i dont care how much you spend or where you buy um.. you say your interested in adding some to your collection .. what does your collection currently consist of.. ? i.e. fedoras, ivy, newsboy, bucket, what have you... i have a hard time believing if youve already went that route youd revert back to baseball caps regardless of how styled up they are...

Those look pretty sweet, I might have to get one. What's the quality like and how do they look compared to normal baseball caps? The illustrations aren't very helpful.

They're high quality. Better than New Eras, if that's your reference point. If you click 'who we are' on their site they give the marketing rundown. I don't wear caps all that often anymore, but when I do it's one from these guys.

those EG caps or similar are obviously a good route to go for casual but "grown up" caps...

Have you tried www.ebbets.com/ballcaps.aspx ? they are all classic re-makes of early baseball eral caps made of authentic, era appropriate materials. Worth every penny. They did the costumes for The Natural!

Have you considered an ivy cap? I have one, and I'd rather wear it than a baseball cap.
