Male Promiscuity = Beauty Hunt?

You can easily see where this idea comes from. The question is, Do you believe it? Many people say male promiscuity is due to fear of commitment or characteristic male desire for sexual variety. While there are many cases of each, it's also clear that for many men promiscuity is a phase followed by long-term commitment. Also, anecdotally there are many women men will sleep with but don't want to be seen with. In short, do you think many guys are sleeping around in the hope of creating, without much unrewarded effort, commitment in a beautiful woman and that essentially promiscuity might not be common if most women were quite attractive?

I think promiscuity comes from one of two sources:
1. An unhealthy self centeredness (saw this happen to a brother of mine)
2. A lack of self confidence, even if one is married, sleeping around can very temporarily satiate the lack of confidence with the conquest of the score.

Number 1 isn't far from "fear of commitment," which probably should have been "fear of, or disinterest in, commitment." Number 2 would seem to involve beauty as a goal, since only a true sex addict would get a boost from sleeping with anything, and maybe long-term commitment as hoped for but deemed hopeless.

That would seem to be true about some, or even most. However I've met a few guys who are quite happy to jump into a committed relationship when they find the right person, but otherwise just like female company. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I think more likely promiscuity would not be so abundant if more girls where long term prospects, rather than just some fun to be around for a while.

Probably, but isn't a woman's exterior an indicator of her long-term prospects? Not just her beauty, though.

Yeah, it's another 'trick,' but just to focus attention on this being a discussion of appearance as it relates to not necessarily conscious mating strategies, namely quantity vs. quality. For example, is the attractive guy on the prowl more likely to be just looking to "score" than the less attractive guy who is frequenting the same places? Are they likely to chat up the same women?

Beauty is not only on the outside, no matter how much you want to say that it is. It isn't even only on the outside for a one night stand.

Define promiscuity? I am sleeping with a few women on a regular basis and have no long term problems with commitment. Just dont have any interest in committing to any of them right now. They know whats up and dont mind the situation. I am safe and having fun, so see nothing wrong with it at all.

No, of course not and there's hard evidence that the good-looking women are not the best women in terms of character, but in this discussion "beauty" is about physical attractiveness.
