A good friend was recently in Paris and hired a VW Phaeton Diesel. He said it was outstanding!

I spent considerable time behind the wheel of a VW Phaeton W12 when it was first introduced to the U.S. I was quite impressed.

In recent years, U.S. presidents have ridden in Cadillacs, not Lincolns.

holy crap, after seeing them at the LA Auto Show, a Rolls Royce hands down. my God those things were amazing to look at. nothing else even came close at the show, including the Maybach (which i have to admit was a complete disappointment).

It's kind of a shame there are only a few around these days which you'd rather be driven around in.

The car service I use runs last and current S-classes as well as E's, so that's what I'm actually being driven around in - but I'd also vote for a Maybach in terms of the best back seat experience. The Phantom is a little too "Oil sheik"

FWIW, I hate being driven. Much prefer driving myself.

True, it's hard to distinguish yourself these days from those with simply "money". That's why I like the classic Daimler DS420. They have the same overall dimensions and interiors of an older Phantom, but has that certain homely British look, with royal pedigree, coachwork by Van Den Plas and yet doesn't have that "bling" look that attracts the unwashed wealthy. I think they were also built right up to 1990, with modern Jag mechanicals...they are also unbelievably affordable to purchase used. And speaking of Daimlers, how about this 1932 Double Six...

What about an old Turbo R ....my dad had one in the early '90s -- sure, its build quality was not technically as good as an an S class' -- but it is quietly majestic I think.
