140 pound lost, should I keep going or do I look ok

I'm new here, I have lost over 140 pounds all by my self (self control, no surgeries, no pills no diets) I'm down to 170 pounds now from 310 a year and a half ago. I'm 5' 9" I was just wondering if I should lose anymore or if I'm at a good weight. I've had conflicting answers from friends and family, some say I'm fine and others say I'm too skinny, yet my doctor says I'm still over weight. I also started another thread for some style advice now that I've lost some weight, and want to start dating again. Right now I'm in-between a 34" and 36" waist, the 36" I try on are baggy and the 34" are kind of tight in the waist. First Pic (beach pic) I was 310 pounds, 50" waist, and the other pic I'm 174 36" waist Added third pic with better fitting clothes 34" Ralph Lauren jeans.

Congratualations on the weight loss. What do you mean by "keep going"? Working out, eating healthy, portion control, what? You seem to have not done anything extreme to lose weight, so I don't see why you wouldn't continue with a healthy lifestyle.

bulk up now. lose that extra skin. bleeh.

I would recommend a weight regimen to add some muscle tone and see where you feel the body fat needs to go from there. I sense that some of the conflicting answers may stem from what looks like a lack of muscle mass. Why not go for the full monty! Congratulations on your sucess, you should be very proud.

how much extra skin do you have? After such a dramatic weight loss, you might need more than muscle to "fill it". You may want to consider surgery.

If your waist is 36", I'd go more. I'm the middle of a cut myself, and I'm a lot taller than you (6'4") and I think my 36" waist is still too large. I'm shooting for 32 - 34".

If you're 5'9", I would go until I hit the 30 - 32" waist mark.

Just my 2 cents. Seriously though, good work. As per what clothes to wear, stop thinking like a fat person and stop wearing baggy clothes!

Congrats on being one of those who didn't make excuses ("Ooohhh, I have hypothroidism") and did it the good old-fashioned way.

Unless you have any medical conditions e.g. hypertension where less weight is better (to a certain extent) because it can decrease your blood pressure, I don't know why he'd say that.

Going by your BMI (more applicable to populations than individuals but the medical profession insists on using it), which is 25.1, you're just ever so slightly above what is considered healthy i.e. 24.9 or less (up to about 19). Lots of things such as increased muscle mass can cause an individual to have in increased BMI while still being perfectly healthy or even in superior health e.g. athletes, but I don't think that's the case with you.

I'll echo what others are saying and suggest some weight training.

Basically just considering if I should loose any more weight, or if I've gone to far and should of work more on trying to gain some back but just muscle.

That's what I was afraid some of the responses would be, but I appreciate the honesty.

Thanks everyone else for your responses, it's greatly appreciated..

By the way, if you have a lot of extra skin on your stomach and health insurance you might be able to get surgery covered as being a risk factor for lower back pain. Discuss this with your doctor. The insurance will probably fight it as a "cosmetic procedure" but a referral to an orthopedist might take care of that. Again, it depends on how much excess skin you're carrying. A doctor is not going to falsify the claim if it's just a small excess that you don't like. You'll be on your own then (and dieting is not going to get rid of it). But if it is a large amount, you might have a shot.

To tell you the truth, 5'9", 170 pounds with a 36" waist is still a bit overweight. I'd keep going. And if you don't already weight lift, which it doesn't appear you do, start; adding some muscle mass will definitely improve your physique.

Thanks for the suggestion, right now I'm in between jobs, one of the main reasons I decided to drop the weight, aside from the other benefits.

The skin isn't to bad, I think if I can get back into the gym, it would be alright. I used to work out from 97 to around 2001, and got to comfortable with my ex and working allot of hours, and gained way to much weight.

This is around 1998
