My new gym is very clean and has a steam room and sauna. I think I've settled on working out mostly at night, but might occasionally workout in the morning.

I have never had access to such nice facilities. How can I best utilize them and what are their benefits?

I know I love hitting the sauna after a good workout. I usually do some cardio to start my workout, hit the weights, do more cardio after, then go in the sauna. I stretch in the sauna, and it feels good and relaxes the muscles. I'm not sure of any benefits other than relaxation, but I wouldn't be suprised if there are some. It just feels fantastic...

If you really want to feel good, alternate between the steam room (wet heat, i.e. lots of sweat) and the sauna (dry heat, less sweat) for 1/2 hour, the get a deep tissue massage. Samre after a vigorous work-out but skip the steam room.....you've already sweated gobs. Drinks lots of liquids before and after.....lots of liquids.

Steam rooms are also really nice in the winter, when the air is so dry outside and inside from the heated air - the steam room does wonders for my nose and air passages. And then a good sit and sweat after a workout is really relaxing so just sit and enjoy. Best to wear shower shoes in the steam room just as you would in the showers, and always put down a towel to sit on.

i love the sauna. the key to getting it really hot is to throw cold water on the metal sensor, and pour hot water on the rocks. also if you pour a little bit of beer on the rocks it gives an amazing yeast smell. its really good. you can also put a little bit of liquid mint into your water, and then pour it on the rocks and it makes the whole sauna smell like mint. another guy put in oldeander i think it was, and he said it helps clear your lungs etc. i dont know how true it is but it smells alright.

What gym do you go to?

When I go into the sauna and steam room. I laugh at the sight of another man's wee wee - just kidding.

If you really want to experience sauna heaven (oxymoronic, no?), check out Spa Castle in the College Point section of Queens.

http://www.nyspacastle.com/eng/estab...stablish02.php

It attracts Koreans, other Asians, Russians, Europeans and other ethnic and non ethnic groups less inclined to come for the svitzing and spritzing. There are 7 saunas with different therapeutic attributes. Whether real or placebo, it makes for a nice themed approach. The rooftop pool is a delight and designed with pneumatic jets like a huge Jacuzzi. The water is no deeper than 3 feet and only meant for wading.

I went once and stayed all day. My teenage daughter and her friend also found it different......kind of like a water park for the new age. I can't wait to go back.

Mostly the benefit is relaxation. Though steam rooms do wonders for my skin - so I'd recommend for the skin care effects alone.
