Bourbon. - Page 33

Just saw The Thirsty Traveller on Travel and Living channel. This episode was about Bourbon. Quite nice and fun to see corn transformed into a fine drink, which I've never tasted though. But as I like a glass of Scotch every now and then I sure will give it a try.

Depends. I always put at least a couple of drops of water in to open them up, but I don't always cut them down to 90 proof or whatever. I think the flavors at barrel/cask strength are much more intense, even with much smaller sips.

That would make sense as many of the compounds are alcohol-soluble.

just bought a bottle of Elijah Craig. Cracked it open tonight. Kinda of bland.

I'll try it another day, but this one might be just for mixing. No real flavor at all. Kind of like watered down coke after it's been sitting a while.

Yup! Thats the reason for water. Somethings don't get water though cause they are better when they are more masked. Water brings out the good AND the bad so its best to tinker.

Stagg has arrived!



I hardly ever open stuff the day I get it, but Stagg is an exception. So chewy and chocolaty. A must buy in my opinion!

Where do you find the Stagg? I haven't seen it in any stores around me and every place online seems to be sold out of it all the time.

I've been drinking Jim Beam Black for a little while now. This thread has convinced me to try something else though so I guess I'll go with Bulleit.

For comparison, here are the prices up here in Canada. The prices are Ontario/Québec since I basically live on the border.

My local liquor store got in a single box with 3 bottles. I was on the list from last year so it went to me. Picked it up today. Talk about a fantastic bourbon.

^^ So I had to, had to, have a shot of that Stagg, no ice, no water, nothing. Amazing. I might put this on par with PVW 20 year old, if not slightly above because the intense flavor appeals to my desire for extremes. At 141.7 proof, there's too much heat to drink this uncut on a routine basis, but wow...

Neither. Try Knob Creek next, then Eage Rare, Basil Hayden, then Booker's. I wouldn't bother with any of the others unless you are really interested in dabbling. If I could only drink one of those for eternity, surprisingly, it'd be Knob Creek. Booker's is a good whiskey, but a little too much bacon fat for me.

There are at lest 30 bottles at my place, if anyone want I might be able to act as middle man, time and energy permitting.

I also tried it straight up this year as I do every year. This year is most chocolaty that I can recall, it tasted almost liqueur like until the intense alcohol burn kicked in. With a little water it rose to another level, chocolaty, leathery, nutty, chewy. Unbelievable. In short, it was one of the best drinking experiences I have had in months.

Grantty, have you heard of this place: http://www.sigmanbottle.com/ Its relatively close to Atlanta and they seem to have a great collection of bourbons.

If I could only have one, I would go with the Evan Williams single barrel. Knob is too sweet and vanillay for me. I think it boarders on one dimensional.

As for the poster's question, I would recommend the Elijah Craig 12, its a nice complex bourbon. More spicy than sweet. I think it blows the doors off Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, Woodford and Maker's Mark at those prices too.
