Me too. My city's allocation was less than the PVW release, so no bottles made it to retail shelves. I would like to get my hands on a bottle but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, which is pretty much inevitable in the secondary market nowadays

Agreed. I want one and am a big four roses fan but I won't pay what the secondary market wants. I will try to find a bottle at retail or pass.

While it's a good bourbon, I have never heard someone say Pappy is worth the price. If you can get it at retail, go for it. Otherwise there are way better options.

I could only find one place in town with a price breakdown of the collection. It's not an upscale place so I could think they're prices are reasonable and comparable to many others.

this was on the menu at south city kitchen, buckhead atlanta - $85 on the nose last night

 

they also had the stitzel weller fitzgerald's very special reserve 20 yr for $135

Those prices for a pour is actually isn't too bad to what I see at my local bar in Houston. I think a sampling of half pours for all of them are in the $200 range at my local bar. They won't even sell just a single pour and only do the samplings.

Standard price on PVW 20 on the secondary market is 1200. Once this years hits, expect that to rise, as it has every year since 2012.

Some of the best whiskies I've tasted this year are from California's Splinter Group, which has been experimenting with finishing bourbons in barrels that previously held its wine. So far I think there are only two releases - Slaughter House and Straight Edge.

Slaughter House is a 9 year old bourbon that was finished in French oak that previously held Napa Valley Bordeaux varietal red wine. Straight Edge is a blend of 5, 7 and 8 year old whiskies from Kentucky and Tennessee, which are finished in Cabernet barrels. In all honesty, I'd miss these more than PVW were they to suddenly dry up, but having been drinking PVW regularly for 10+ years now, it's seriously just hype for me now. My local place offered me a bottle last year at retail and I passed it up. Yeah, I could have flipped it, but to me that's not cool knowing someone who may have actually wanted to drink it would now not have the opportunity. Karma.

So you'd recommend the wine barrel finished bourbons?

 

A hear a lot of commendations for Angel's Envy (which is finished in port barrels) but I've never gotten around to trying it.

Angels Envy are some of my favorite bourbons (the Cask Strength and the Port). But I am much more of a wine drinker then a liquor drinker.
