How does one work 50+ hours a week?

So I visited a CPA firm yesterday, and now I'm completely disillusioned with the whole accounting field, and just jobs in general. I'm in college and am having a hard time grasping the fact that I'll soon be working that much. How do people keep from going nuts?

We were all in college once, right? How did you go from the partying, sleeping in late, spending all day laying by the pool, to working all day, every day?

Are there any jobs in the accounting field that still allow some semblance of a home life? Does a private accountant work fewer hours than a CPA?

Bear in mind I didn't do any actual WORK at the CPA firm yesterday, so maybe the work is super-interesting and exciting and I'll love being there 10 hours a day LOL

+10000 and then some more.

College is but a stepping stool, allowing you to get a few acronyms behind your name, so that you can turn that 4 years of, as you called it, partying and drinking, into something to sustain you for the rest of your life.

College years are fantasies. College students are idealists. When the pressures of paying rent/mortgages hit you, when you realize (hopefully) that to continue to live through handouts from your parents makes you a fucking loser, then you can and will be willing to work >50 hour/week.

Hell, 50 hour/week is NOTHING.

Difference between being a MAN and being a whiny little kid/pussy/wimp-ass.

Thanks. It's not so much the time, I guess I was hoping the work would provide some semblance of enjoyment. I've worked 50 hour weeks before, but I enjoyed the work (golf course) and it wasn't real "work" persay. I'm looking for a career I'll enjoy, more than a career I won't have to put in time at.

Also, I live in SoCal and see and know lots of people working themselves to the bone, just to be able to afford their luxury car payment. I don't want be that person, and I don't want a luxury car.

Get a summer job, it helps transition if you really are having that hard of a time grasping the idea of working.

Are you talking about an internship, or just any job? I work 24 hours a week year-round, while going to school full-time. That being said, I enjoy the work and school.

My original question should read "How do people work 50+ hours a week doing something they hate." I can only assume the answer is, "they don't." Every CPA I've talked to says they love the job, but then again, those who hated the job are probably no longer CPA's.

Excuse me? 50 hours a week would be a cake walk. I work 60 to 90 hours a week 7 days a week. Have been for years. Basically it's called I want to get somewhere and will do what it takes to get there.

Oh and yes I went to college full time, worked a full time job and partied like an animal.....

I'll sleep when I'm dead.

Work sucks. If you want money, you have to do something that sucks. Otherwise you wouldn't be making the big bucks. Simple economics.

But when exactly will you live?

Co-sign. I worked 65-70 hour weeks right out of college. Its only like an extra hour or two per day...no biggie really...sometimes I had to skip lunch or eat in 5 minutes. But after work, I still partied my ass off....i used to go out every night of the week....I can survive on 4-5 hours of sleep a night...I've been on that schedule since high school. After working that hard early on, I'm at a point where I don't work much. I spend most of the day screwing around on the net. Work hard early, it does pay off later.

Exactly. I'm trying to figure out how/why people are depressed, loathe waking up in the morning, and want to go Office Space on their job, yet they say "Hey, look at my new Lexus" as if that makes it all better.

Glad to see I'm not the ony one that thinks 50 hours a week would be on the light side. When I was an intern working summers in an engineering firm I routinely worked about 50 hours a week. 10 billable hours a day plus an unpaid lunch hour. Typically was at the office from 6AM-5PM or 7AM-6PM. If you work 6 or 7 days a week it's cake to break 50.

If you loathe your job, find another one. Work shouldn't be something you hate, otherwise you'll suck at it. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of the daily life, calling people, interacting with people and just living in the city. Not working would be extremely boring to me.
