Alfred Dunhill for Men Fragrance (1934)

Am sort of shopping for the Alfred Dunhill for Men fragrance which was created in 1934. Fragrancenet lists it (out of stock), but other sites only lists other Dunhill fragrances. Basenotes indicates it is in production, but the reviews under it would indicate that it is not in production. Saw a post on some forum that indicated it was getting very rare; and now I can't find that post or forum. Would appreciate any information that anyone might have.

Have you tried this one? If you haven't tried it I wouldn't go to the trouble because there are only two ways this will play out, and both ways kind of stink.

1) you'll love it and cannot get any more
2) you'll hate it and be upset that you put so much effort into procuring it.

Thanks folks. Finally discovered where I saw the post (Badger & Blade). The Dunhill for Men is gone. The ebay listing provided shows the Dunhill Edition box in the photo, so that isn't it. I have a notification request in to fragrancenet, but as rare as this puppy now is, can't imagine what the cost would be. Guess I will give up on this quest.

Tomasso, I did read Basenotes, but not carefully enough until you prodded me! Just order a bottle from NYC; hope it is GREAT!! Thanks, John

I hope you'll let us know what you think of it when it arrives. I am cautiously curious.

Thomas, I wish you could find it in your heart to be more optimistic! Now you have me worried!

John,

I don't mean to worry you. I've bought many scents blind and found some absolute winners, so it happens. The best case is that you love the scent and there is plentiful supply, and if that's the case I am glad.

Doc, are there any smell-alikes for this, or at least distant relatives? I'm starting to think I should consider this one... Too bad the Dunhill boutique in Houston closed years ago - that's where I bought my first bottle of Edition.

Yep... "to blind buy, or not to buy." We've all been there. For me, I've found that Basenotes is a great resource, but in the "blind buy dilemma," it can be a great way to end up with a bunch of expensive stinkers. I stopped blind buying years ago for this reason... the reviews are great, some members with good "noses" swear by it, the notes look like something you'd want, so you take a chance and spend the cash. Receiving it... you hate it.

Parfums de NIcolai New York was one of these for me. Everybody went ON and ON about how wonderful it was and so I bought it blind (and it wasn't cheap!) I got it and just didn't see the appeal. Same with a few Creeds.

Nevertheless, from time to time, there are some winners that you'll like. But, in general, my favorite scents are still those I've found on my own through sniffing. Recommendations are a good way to start, but seldom produce a life-long love.

Anyway, I, too, am curious to hear your opinion of this one!

Heh, funny you mention PdN New York. I like it well enough (I too bought it blind) but Mrs. Thomas hates it so. To me it's a chic, pleasant powdery orange amber. To her it's the can of air freshener in her grandmother's bathroom.

Can't win 'em all, ya know.

I know of none, but these folks http://www.theperfumeshoppe.com/Scripts/default.asp responded to my "looking for Dunhill 1934" e-mail by saying they don't have it but could recommend something similar. I never followed up as I found the genuine article.

The other Dunhills I have (or have sampled) smell nothing like it ...
"Dunhill Man" ... great but different scent
"Dunhill Desire" ... ugh. Try a sample first ...
"Dunhill Pursuit" ... just a postcard sample ... meh ... certainly nothing like the 1934.
