Part-time job: Ask for a raise in letter or in person?

Guys, I work part-time at a nice golf course while I'm in college. I'm going to ask for a raise, should it be done in a formal letter, or just walk up and ask my boss? I'm more persuasive in writing, and I rarely work while my boss is here, so it's hard to catch him. I have many good reasons, but like I said I'm more eloquent in writing than speaking. Thanks!

This conversation needs to be in person.

If you are uncomfortable try scripting the conversation. Write out your words and how you imagine your boss will respond. Practice with a friend until you are comfortable. The point is not to memorize a speech but to become confident with what you are saying.

I have used scripting for many years for important conversations.

You cant really ask for a raise by letter. It has to be done in person. You need to explain to your boss how your efforts have been positively impacting the business and then propose a salary increase that it appropriate. Expect for him to negotiate your percentage down.

Please don't ask for the raise in a letter. Sure fire way to not get the raise.

get a new job, then tell your boss you'll leave if they dont pay more, or just leave.

a letter is easy to ignore.

realistically you should start getting exact expectations (or if you do, follow them and monitor times you exceed. eg, it took my 3 hours to re-seed and in the extra hour before lunch i water the petunias), if he denies yoru raise, start taking 6 hours to do 4 hour jobs, youll either get more money, or have an easier job!
