Isn't (wasn't?) Dennis Chambers widely acknowledged as the best R&B and Jazz Fusion Drummer?
Or, am I a decade behind the times?

I don't know about "the best," but he's certainly one of the best. I'd have cited him, but my list was growing too long.

I'm not sure to what extent the younger current music fans even think of "jazz fusion" as a category, but apparently it's making a comeback; I was surprised and pleased to discover that my friend's high school-aged daughter and her musician friends have been studying the likes of Mahavishnu Orchestra and its contemporaries. (We took her to see RTF on the reunion tour.)

Always had a soft spot for Max Weinberg, Ringo and Stephen Morris.

Some great stories about max suffering during the springsteen tours and taping the sticks to his wrists in order to keep playing.

I think Ringo's underrated. Sure, he had his limitations"”lord knows they frustrated Paul"”but what he could play, he played superbly.

I dunno about Max. Whenever I hear him on Conan O'Brien, he sounds to me like a guy with sticks taped to his wrists; he can un-swing a groove like nobody I know. I'm told he's a heck of a nice guy. Still, gimme Anton Fig or, better yet, Marvin "Smitty" Smith any day. (For that matter, I prefer Ernest "Boom" Carter, though Weinberg made more sense stylistically for the E Street Band.)

Say what you will but each and every time I put on Songs for the Deaf I am absolutely blown away by his drumming effort; "Song for the Dead" is a great example of that talent. QOTSA live simply doesn't sound the same without him on the skins.

...........Karen Carpenter....just kidding.

My fav is Airto, percussionist supreme but explosive when he hits the sets. Jack DeJohnette and Dannie Richmond are also distinctive in their attack and sound.

Another +1 for Danny

And when I was a youngster (and still!) I used to love me a little Dave Lombardo. Still no better metal drummer alive IMO.
