I'm a gourmand and not a gourmet.

A 12 ounce Kobe Beef steak sounds wonderful.

The first 4 items in the article are for gourmets.

I had no idea vanilla was so expensive.

Gold leaf sounds idiotic, the whole point seems to be to be able to say "I'm so rich I can eat gold!" It's like Scabal weaving gold into the stripes of their cloth.

True Kobe from Japan costs even more than that.

Winter truffles are the bomb. I love to cook with those. Haven't done it in a long time. Summer truffles are a total waste of money even at 1/10 the price. They look the same, but have absolutely no flavor.

Could've been better researched. For example, truffles are cultivated and have been for two hundred years.

I love Saffron though. Especially with mussels or chicken.

I can attest to the bloody cost of Vanilla. My wife really enjoys baking and once wanted to make a pear dish infused with real vanilla. Finidng real vanilla beans (in the bud) was a bit difficult and quite expensive.

Aren't there some really esoteric things that people pay much more for? Granted, some may be illegal and therefore not reported by CNN. Nevertheless, despite my appreciation for great food...foie gras is too rich for me, caviar is not my thing, truffles are wonderful enhancers but I don't go crazy for them.. I guess I am simple...I love super fresh fish (had Greek Orata the other night), great olive oils, local cheese and meat. Right now the best thing on earth are the fruits I have been getting..organic strawberries, peaches and nectarines in the summer are ridiculously good and within almost anyones budget.

Penzy's has vanilla pods.
They are a pretty good resource for spices and dehydrated herbs.
The nice thing is you can have a variety of packaging options from bulk to jars.
With something like saffron, you can get several levels of quality in small to relatively large quantities.
Vanilla, you may have options on where the pods come from, Madagascar and Mexico.
Saffron, even a few grams will last for over a year.

Really great balsamic is pretty farking expensive as well. I have average stuff for making dressings and putting in dishes, and very good stuff to finish or top things with.

Yeah, vanilla gets pricey, but it's often in otherwise simple, inexpensive dishes.

You can see gold used often in Japanese cuisine. We do it at home sometimes too, and it`s really not that expensive at all.

My parents fed me caviar as a child and I've had it throughout my life, whenever I had no choice in the matter. There is nothing I dislike more than caviar. Well maybe that weird cheese that had some sort of creature in it and I refused to eat.
