Best Indian Restaurant in London?

What is the best Indian restaurant in London, price being no object?
Although I have no recommendations for Indian restaurants in London since I have never been, I can guarentee that when it comes to Indian food, seldom does the price of the meal have a positive linear relationship with the taste of the food.

The best one that I know of is also one of the cheapest. It has a line out the door at 6 pm and is always packed.

name and location?

THere is a choice to be made here: you want a curry joint, or something a little out of the way?

The former is ubiquitous, and, I am convinced, part of a massive franchise operation. They all have the same menus, and there's probably a kitchen under Hyde Park that supplies all of them with more or less identical dishes via pneumatic tube. This is one reason the service is so slow. Food can be wonderful, but you have to be sure in advance that you'll like it. Sort of like A&S.

Notlawyermom and I had one of our all-time favorite meals at Bombay Brasserie. But (1) it was over ten years ago; and (2) we got seriously drunk, so discount the recommendation by whatever degree you feel is appropriate.

Me too, only 20 years ago. Goa fish curry with more Alsatian wine than was probably good for my development.

I don't agree with this at all. Many cheap good places. The indian restaurant landscape changes pretty rapidly in central London, I would go and ask around. I had a superb vegetarian buffet near Tottenham which was something like 7 quid per person. edit: no way I would claim "best in London" but if you want to check it out and the surrounding Indian restaurant neighborhood, it is called Diwana on Drummond St.

Feynmix is right about the price/quality ratio. For example, the celebrated Veeraswamy restaurant off Regent St has pretty high prices but sub-par food by British-Indian standards.

I think it's best to stick with the unflashy Indian places to get the best food and value. In South Kensington I used to go to two, Khans of Kensington and Khyber Pass which were both worthwhile.

I've also been told by Indian restauranteurs in both London and Glasgow that the food they serve in Scottish places is stronger-flavoured that in English ones. This may have just been them humouring me when I suggested it though.

Khan's used to be great when I traveled to London with my parents. You would have to line up outside before they opened to get a table.

I havent been there since I moved here, but I hear that these days its nothing special

Had a couple of great meals at the Painted Heron - not cheap, and I'm sure I'll get blasted for lack of authenticity, but for a semi-sophisticated Indian this gets my vote. Interesting ingredients, great presentation and slightly different to the typical dishes. Oh, and if you want spicy, they can blow your socks off too.
