Shirt makers in Boston?

Are there any custom shirt makers in Boston?

I'd really like to be measured for a shirt by the same person who will be making it, and I also don't want to wait for months at a time for my shirts to be ready - which kind of rules of Jantzen and all the other shirt makers I found doing searches. At the same time, I don't want to pay more than $125-150 per shirt. What are my options?

Call Rizzo Tailor in Harvard Square. He does suits -- and from the look of the suits during the basting period (I've seen them on mannequins), the finished product must be outstanding -- and I believe I saw shirt swatch books there. Not sure how much he'd charge though. I'd expect it to be at least $150 maybe a bit more.

I wish Rizzo did shirts, but I asked and the answer was no. Any other ideas?

Mosher's just of Commonwealth Avenue advertises "custom shirts." I highly doubt they do this in house, though, and who knows what the price is. They sell Hickey Freeman RTW for $150, so I can just imagine what they charge for a MTM.

Presumably you could always give Brooks Bros. a shot, but again it seems very overpriced.

There used to be a guy on Newberry -- perhaps around Clarendon, on second floor who did shirts -- "Alan" something or other.

I have heard very good things about boline in Norwell on the south shore. I am going to try him after I drop a few more lbs. His shorts are 170 and up, but he is supposed to be talented and use fine fabrics.

Arthur, at Boline custom shirts is a real shirtmaker. Second generation. He moved to Boston a few years ago from Lebanon. he Is in his early 30's. I sent someone from Boston to him a year ago and they were quite happy. I have seen his work. I have no hesitation recommending him. Great guy, I think he is the only real shirtmaker left in the Boston Area. Eddie and Asdour are no longer in business. Alan Roleau and others all send the work out. Carl www.cego.com

If the guy from Boline in Norwell is the same guy who used to share space with Antonio Ayala (custom tailor also in Norwell) then I own some of his shirts. I would be happy to post pictures and comments if someone can confirm it's the same guy.

I was thinking of someone named Alan Belzarian or something like that. He had a couple of skilled tailors working for him at one time, though they weren't to my liking.

Can anyone confirm what montecristo was asking about? I'd love to see pictures if it is in fact the same guy. Thanks for the offer

Arthur did share space with Tony Ayala. He first came to boston to work with Albert Derterossian. Albert says he is retired, except his cusomers won't let him. I remeber the Name of Alan Belzarian, but really know nothing about him. Carl www.cego.com

I should have the time to get these done in a day or so. Light is a problem, however -- you may have to wait until the weekend so I can shoot in the sun. Also, these shirts are approximately three years old (but haven't seen too much wear). Just FYI. As for Alan Bilzerian, he has a well known store on the left side of the first block of Newbury: http://www.forbes.com/2001/07/19/bostonshops_2.html Not just for women, though. Bilzerian has all sorts of cool stuff for men from inexpensive to ultra-expensive. There is also a tailor (well, not really a tailor, but a designer who outsources to various tailors for bespoke suits) on the second floor of one of the buildings on the right hand side of the first block of Newbury. If you walk up that side of the street and peruse the second and third floor windows, you can't miss it. I went in there once and talked to the guy -- he seemed very informed and his offerings quite stylish. Expensive, though, if I recall correctly. Unfortunetely, I forget his name. Montecristo
