restaurant tipping etiquette - Page 4

Whatever dude, I did a number of years behind a bar in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the US I tip and I tip very very well, but dont concern yourself with all these dumbass rules. No bartender who pops the caps off of 4 Buds and charges you 12 bucks is going to think you are a twat for leaving a 2 dollar tip. Likewise, if you go to the bar and order a highball that is $15 only by virtue of being made with top shelf liquour, no-one expects you to tip $4+ on that.

You are a freaking idiot if you think that tipping big makes staff like you. Its like being a stripper, its all about the money. Unless you totally fuck up, no one remembers you after the shift is over.

1 drink =1
2 drink =2, or possibly 1
3 drink=2
4 drink=2

These are acceptable tipping rules for your average bar. Of course, you could also go with $3 on 4 drinks, but it's not a necessity.

Anything above 4 drinks varies.

I have been waaay more bars than you and drank waaay more drinks than you. That is the rule of thumb, everyone knows it. What other system is there? $5 beer...you gonna give 15%? 20% if it was an "exceptional" cap opening experience? The drink is $5. You leave a one on the counter. Simple as that. I just hope to god you dont stiff the dudes....

Also, first article I googled : http://media.www.theorion.com/media/...-1511477.shtml

"Cyr says a good general rule is to tip fifty-cents per beer, but usually she gets tipped a dollar per drink. She says any tip is appreciated.

"Let's be honest. I know good and bad tippers, and they definitely get different service," she says."

Dont be a douche.

i do nto thinkit is being a douche, it si about being reasonable, you pay someone 20% or more of the price just to open a bottle? making fairly complex cocktail maybe.. but look at the operations required to serve a beer or a simple drink, 1. find bottle 2. open bottle 3. pour into glass(possibly) 4 give to client.

I hate when the bartender doesn't see you give the tip as they are in a rush, I often assume they then think I am a cheapwad, even though I leave the tip on the bar, and then the next time I assume they won't want to serve me promptly

Okay, thanks for the inside info there old man.
Since you're such a sport with the tipping etiquette, can you help me with some other stuff in my admittedly naive and shallow life?
You're correct, I've not lived much. I hope some day to be a big-timer like you.
