Hey guys,

So I love my jcrew quoddy bluchers, but recently problem has developed. It seems the edge of the knot at the end of the stitching on the right side of my left shoe has begun rubbing against the top of my foot. It's so bad that I can no longer wear the bluchers without socks, because the knot rubs the skin on the top of my foot raw. Even with socks I can feel the sharp little barb and it is quite uncomfortable. My question is, is this a normal issue with quoddy construction or is this a defect, and can it be remedied? I don't want to cut it, because I am afraid that the stitching will begin to unravel. It's so frustrating that if I can't solve this problem I'll have to get rid of them.

Anyone know how their Quoddy sizing matches up to their Brannock size? Measuring my foot like they say to do on the website, seems like I should maybe go down half a size from 8 to 7.5 for length - that sound right?

I had the same exact issue with my boat shoes when I first got them. What did was to stretch out the width of the shoe so the knot doesn't dig into my feet. Next, I wore socks with my boat shoes for like a month, hard. And now, they're my most comfortable shoes. Good luck!

I have a pair of the burnt orange grizzly boots (no canvas) on the vibram and love them. I'm not a fan of the crepe sole though, if it had a Vibram I would say go for it. My version is the one from Stuart & Wright (also on sale) if you're looking for an alternative.

Dang, those look awesome. Do they run TTS? I think they are out of my size =/ I was thinking crepe sole would be more comfortable, have you had experience with both crepe and vibram?

Same as you're typical Quoddy size. I just don't like the look of that particular crepe sole. I tried out J.Crew's Grizzly Boot with the Crepe and just didn't like it. The vibram sole is fantastic though, makes the boot look more like a boot and it is seriously comfortable. I wore mine for basically the whole day on the first day of wear (with long periods of walking) and they were so comfortable I thought I was wearing cushioned sneakers.

those are great. i agree with tonio. the crepe sole is not really what you want to go with for an everyday shoe/boot, especially if you plan to wear during the winter. nice shoes though.

Can the leather sole on the ring boots be replaced with the vibram sole?

i dont think so but i would call/email quoddy to make sure. they can usually retro-fit most sole options but the leather sole is different. it has to do with the actual construction of the shoe.

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere in this thread, but I don't really have the time to read the whole thing at the moment.

I just got a pair of Quoddy Suede Chukkas for Christmas. I'm a 13 in most shoes and that's the size I got. Trying them on initially, they fit great in length, but seem to be a bit tight around the sides (widest part) of my feet. Is this normal? They're leather, so will they stretch enough to be more comfortable? 13 is Quoddy's biggest size, so I can't really size up.

Thanks for the help,
Alex

I'm contemplating the purchase of a pair of Grizzly Boots. Not sure yet whether with or without the sheepskin lining. Like these:

http://www.tresbienshop.com/brand/quoddy/grizzly-boot-brown-w-sheepskin-lining

It would be great if someone could help with the sizing.

I'm generally a 43.5, i.e. UK 9.5, US 10.5. Having read the sizing infos on the Quoddy site US 10.5 would be the correct size.

But I'm thinking of taking out the memory foam insole as I'm not too fond of these. I read that the insole is pretty thick. I might replace it with a thinner one. So would then a US 10 perhaps be better?

What about the sheepskin lining? Does that make a difference in sizing?

Thanks in advance.

Hi:

Well, what luck. After countless attempts at finding info on the sheepskin-lined models, I had to blindly go into buying and trying (via End) some of these Grizzlies. The answer is quite complicated. Firstly, because different people have different ideas of what "fits." Some people like to wiggle their toes in their shoes. Others like to have shoes that fit like gloves.

I normally wear a Eur43 and a US 10-10.5 depending on the last, leather, and maker. My foot is a bit wide (close to an E-width, perhaps). I take a 10.5 D in the AE Macneil, a UK 9.5 in the Loake 024, but a UK 9 in the Loake Capital (a somewhat longer last, wide in the forefoot), if that makes things clearer.

In the lined Grizzlies, the sheepskin lining definitely makes a difference, as their sizing does not compensate, evidently, for the space taken up by the fur. As a result, I found the UK 9 / US 10 rather tight at first for me. To make matters more complicated, I was told by Quoddy that the Chromexcel would give significantly (though not an entire shoe size) and furthermore that the sheepskin would compact, thus creating more room. After a day of walking around the house with them (with plastic bags over them in case I need to return them) wearing expedition-weight mountaineering socks (making it almost unbearably tight) I have found them to give just enough that I get a glove-like fit with thin socks. Barefoot feels great in them. I would be hesitant about going up a size, as the boots would start to get clownishly long.

In conclusion, I would go with a half size up if you can, assuming that you want the extra room, or your regular size if you can bear (pun intended) a possibly long break-in time. In the end, I am keeping mine, as they feel nice with thin socks, and wearing thick socks with them, while extra warm, would lose the sheepskin sensation that they provide.

As for the sole, I am really liking the crepe sole. If you are using them in very cold climates or for standing around on the cold ground while not moving very much (like in my cold-ass store with concrete floors), removing any insole (in mine, the insole is sheepskin) would make you lose the benefit of insulation. I am a big proponent of "barefoot" shoes, and am content with the wide-bodied construction and excellent feel of these particular soles.

I hope that helps you decide.
