I don't think it is overrated. I made a lot of progression when I started with it (Now I am able to press a lot more than when I only used dumbles). You can press more with a benchpress, but dumbles are good for coordination

Earlier, somebody said bench press (and I'm assuming other chest-focused exercises) has functionality and is not just for aesthetics. I've never heard any of my friends mention functionality when they workout their chest. They keep telling me that I should do more chest exercises to "look big" and other aesthetic related reasons. While the argument for a symmetrical body is true, I'm curious as to what are the functional aspects of bench pressing for every day life. I only do bench press and pushups once a week. I focus on legs, back, abs, arms, and shoulders 2-3 times a week because I feel those are more useful as far as overall strength is concerned and in functionality.

While bench press is a pretty important exercise, I definitely place dead lifts and squats higher in importance, but the "IN" thing to do apparently is to not work out your legs and just do curls and bench press.

Some other good compound exercises is military press and wide grip chin ups.

A couple of years ago, I was on a program which focused on those five exercises plus a bent over row, and thats all you did for 8 weeks, squatting three times a week was killer, however I gained a immense amount of strength during that summer, bench went up 35 lbs, squats 100 lbs, and deads about 100 lbs.

The only problems I had with the program, was it didn't really affect the size of my arms as much as the rest of my body, but the way it affects everyone is always different.

Very true. Squat and deadlift will at least work your back, legs and core. Bench press is a bragging game.

I tried benching with a bar for the first time ever yesterday. It was strange, the weight I normally use and struggle with with dumbbells felt like next to nothing on the bar.
