Red Wine vs. Beer

OK, I run like a mad man to keep my weight down. I'm currently at 155 and am 5'9". In college I was around 200lbs, and not from working out anything but my mouth on fast food. In the years right after college I focused on my diet, and played hockey 5 nights a week to stay fit. Now I'm 30, and hockey 5 nights a week is not an option (too much wear and tear) so I run about 40 miles a week on average to stay slim. I also still watch what I eat. Now here's my dilemma. I have always had red wine with dinner. But now that the summer has rolled around, a cold beer is a delightful option. I just feel that the calories and potential weight gain from drinking a beer every night is too much when compared to red wine. What are your thoughts on the matter? Am I being a lunatic? Can I substitute a beer for my wine and still be even up calorically speaking? I hate Michelob Ultra but do like Heineken Light...so that may be an option.

...you could always just drink water. You don't have to have a drink every night.

agree with the water choice, or perhaps Diet Coke?

I think you are making a bigger deal out of it than you should. Any light beer will probably be around the same or less calories than a glass of wine. Most regular micro brews run 180-220 calories, so you're looking at around an extra 100 calories if you drink a "normal" microbrew. Squeeze in an extra mile of running (or take the stairs or whatever) and you'll even up.

I have friends like you and the whining about calories, to be honest gets REALLY annoying from them.

Drink what you want, just work harder to work it off.

A light beer is about 100 cal.

A glass of red wine is about 90 cal.

In terms of your overall daily cal requirements, that's sweet fuck all.

Enjoy.

I hate diet soda, and as for water, its all I drink (aside from my morning coffee) all day. At least 200 fl oz. I like to have a drink in the evening to cool off from the day. I guess a light beer evens out with a wine. Thanks.

As for the guy who thought the question was "annoying"...why read a thread in the body conscious section? Sounds like you just like to punish yourself, and thats annoying.

Keep in mind the potential health benefits offered by wine. Lots of research surrounding compounds like resveratrol (sp?). Those health benefits (plus the taste) may outweigh the calories. . .

200 fl oz?!?! Thats a shit-ton. While your not at risk of bingeing or anything, that is rather unnecessary, even if you do kick out 40 miles a week. Keeping it a good gallon (128) should be fine.

To your original question, I favor beer over wine anyhow, so grab a Dos Equis (145 cal) and enjoy it. If you really are worried about it as extra calories, remove the beer one night a week and that should account for the extra calories the other 6 nights.

Current medical literature supports the use of any alcohol*. It's not just wine.

*It goes without saying that this is in moderation i.e. one drink/day.

If you are really having only 1 glass of wine or 1 beer in the evening, there is really very little difference.

If you notice you are getting fat, cut back.

Hops has similar chemicals, afaik.
Don't waste your time on light beer. Instead, drink fewer good beers.
