Tequila

Tequila is, by far, my favorite drink. While occasionally I'll do a shot if someone else suggests, I sip it in almost all circumstances. What is the general reputation of tequila? Is it classless because it is so often associated with spring break? I would never stop drinking it, but I'm interested in what the general attitude toward it is. Is it a guys drink? girls drink? etc..

Today is actually world tequila day. I think in recent years with the advent of "Ultra-premiums" such as Patron, Corzo and Don Julio, tequila has gotten to the point of being a more sophisticated alcohol.

As long as its not "Cuervo Gold" or something like that, its fine. I've been drinking more and more tequila and its one of my favorite spirits. Its gone a long way since cheap margarita mixes in college.

One of my clients bought me a bottle of Herradura Tequila Reposado, it's great for sipping and margaritas (which I've been consuming too many of lately).

I've been to Mexico very frequently the past two years. There, they sip the tequila out of a glass and have a sangrita, which is tomato juice, horseradish and wosteshire sauce. Muey Buen! Making great margaritas is an awesome science!

I don't know if it's my favorite hard liquor--whisky would have to take that title--but I do love the taste. And for some reason, it affects me in a really positive way...I mean, I sip whisky, I get contemplative and need to stare at a peat fire for ages. Tequlia almost always=fun. And it's a drink that a lot of girls seem to like, too. The fun ones, at least.

Tequila, like wine, ranges from a skid row and fraternity buzz juice to an elegant, sophisticated drink. It all depends upon how you drink it and what you drink.

We go to the Jalisco region of Mexico frequently and have been impressed by the Mexican governments steps towards promoting high quality tequilia. On our most resent visit we met with a Mexican government licensed tequilia specialist (that is equal to a trained sommelier or CWS educator) who took us through the history of modern tequila's. It is an understatement to say that a lot has happened in the last 15 years and all of it good!

Our experience is that the tequila industry people in Mexico like the better blanca tequilas. With very little aging and cask time, they feel that you taste the pure flavor of the agave plant. Of course, they sip it.

If they have a cocktail, then never use mix, just one part tequila, one part fresh squeezed lime, one half part Cointreau shaken with ice.

Never, ever do they take shots much less with salt and lime. They feel that is just San Diego frat boy antics.

A friend introduced me to Don Julio and it definitely is a step up from the cliche body shot tequilas. I did try the "ultra premium" Cuervo Platino recently and while expensive it wasn't nearly as smooth or sippable to me as the DJ.

Here is a pic of a few of the ones we are serving lately. I think the Partida blanca is possibly the best blanca at any price. I wasn't too impressed by the Jose Quervo Preserva. I think that Centenario, any of them, is perhaps the best all around valued premium tequila. Try theirs. It is readily available at major liquor chain stores too.

I have a bottle of the Centanario Reposado, its extremely cheap at the mexican duty free stores. I like it, its a bit spicy/peppery and tastes really good. interestingly enough, they produce Patron outside of Guadalajara, but they do not sell Patron itself within mexico for some reason.

Now there's something that could be used in mainland europe... There allready were some cracks in the picture but up untill now I thought that tequila was indeed just for shots... I'm fairly educated in wines and whisky's , looks like there's another challenge out there!

I drink cheap camino real tequila, mostly. And i like it

I agree that tequila almost always = good times.

Just a question for the tequila cognoscenti:
Is mezcal con gusano just folklore or the sign of a product which is not mass produced?

Not my favorite drink, but Penca Azul Reposado is one of the few I can drink, a very good sipper, and cool bottle

Of the new tequilas, Milagro is excellent. But I am most fond of Cazadores. It's a quality product which you can find in a lot of bars"”the good ones anyway.

it is not to be confused with tequila they are 2 dirrent types of liquour. even the mass produced mezcal has the gusano. but you have to got to direct to the source for mzcal in most cases at least close. they exists a mezal market in one city. I have eard the same ting about tequila but i have been to jalisco, so i do not know first hand.
