Car for Dubai - rather than brand new I'm thinking E Type Jag.

I'm relocating to Dubai shortly, and will have a hire car of for the first 3 months, within that time I'll sort myself out with car number 1. (Number two for the better half is an easier choice.)

I really don't want to get into the cycle of 'my car is 6 months old, how can I be seen in it'. I'm not generally that way anyhow, but it is a pretty crazy place in terms of consumerism.

So my inclination is to go for a classic E-Type convertible, partly as a reposte to the newness of the place, but mostly coz I like the car.

Your opinions on the car are welcome, even moreso your experiences. But I'm also curious as to whether it is a good choice given culture and climate (and possibly traffic).

That is pretty much how I feel. But E type jags don't have the right A/C for the Dubai. More recent jags (bosch electronics etc) may do the trick.

One option is a 70smercedes. The 450 SEL 6.9 era saloons will be a rarity in the new new new new new obsession common in UAE. The build quality is there and these are simple enough to diagnose and fix.

I have an acquaintance that works in Dubai. He says you NEED a good A/C for your car over there. Maybe the E-type should be your second car (or 3rd if you are getting one for the SO).

Yes - AC is one of the two things on my mind. I understand I can overhaul it for about USD1500 and have it spitting ice into the cabin (when the roof is on).

The other thing is engine overheating, which I also think I can solve.

It will need to be slightly non standard, but that doesn't bother me particularly.

I know there are some people over in the forums at Jag-lovers.org who have XJ-S's in the Middle East and have discussed some of the necessary mods. Probably there are some E-type guys in that situation also, though I did not participate in the E-type forum. You know it's hot, right?! ~ Huntsman

I had the impression that older Mercedes were fairly plentiful in those Arab nations considering that their wealth was already established by the '70s.

Armored Mercedes S class (old or new) or Model 600.

Granted, gas is cheap in Dubai, but can you imagine how much he'd have to pay for gas each year?

Mid 90s Chevy Caprice. Big, V8, strong AC.

I would say a 1970s Cadillac Convertible with longhorns in the front would seem appropriate.

Its got carbs though, but if you are seriously considering a Jag I doubt that would be a problem.

The older mercedes are rarer because of the "latest, latest latest"obsession there. To drive one one, with all the chrome all shined up would make it stand out and people would be saying "wish I had not sold mine".

The elderado is an awesome idea. I would get it Boss hOgg white and put on a set of longhorns.

Yes, the Cowboy aspect would be really played up. Preferably also wear a large white cowboy hat, and a jeweled bolo tie with exotic skin boots. Truly, I think the people there would eat it up as they appreciate expensive flashiness.

Thanks so far.

Huntsman that is a useful link, much appreciated. Yep - I know it can be, and currently is, hot 50C or 122F at 5PM on Tuesday.

I guess, not being from the states, the US models don't have an immediate resonance with me.

There are some beatiful late 60's mercs, that if in good condition look splendid. They may also be more reliable than the jag.

So - AC seems to the major concern. time for some more research.
