NYC restaurant week, ever had a good meal? - Page 2

Restaurant week is like New Years Eve, St. Patrick's Day, etc... a good time to lay low. That said, I had a really good cheese/wine tasting meal at Artisanal during RW '01.

Restaurant wk was a joke for me last year. I went to Firebird and couldnt help but start laughing during the meal. The service was sooooooooo rushed. Different people at the table were eating different meals because they rushed us so much. The food was Very good, but incredibly small amount. I'm pretty sure I was done with my fish in under 45 seconds lol

What generally happens during restaurant week in NYC is that the best restaurants who participate offer a different menu, very limited and the food served is mediocre by these restaurants' standards.

You're reinforcing the point I was trying to make. I'm simply saying that many people go to a place during RW expecting to experience that restaurant 'as it is' every other week of the year, and it's rarely anything like that. I have no issue at all with price levels, or how restaurants choose to approach RW... I just think it's a bad idea to think going in that you're getting the same thing everyone got last week, just at 1/4 of the price.

Ah OK gotcha. However, this is the restaurants' fault. They don't advertise "come to restaurant week, we'll serve you a sub-par meal", the whole event is marketed as an opportunity to sample the greatness of NY's finest restaurants for a lower price for a special week. False advertising and people falling for it are inevatibly disappointed and whine about it.

From what I remember, when they started out they were all about drumming up business in a depressed economic time. They used to serve the full menu and just hope that people would actually show up, for once.

Yes, it was created in the late '80s recession, I believe.

So I decided to try it tonight. Place was packed. The $38 for 3 courses does really fill you up. I tried the Lamb tongue, Lamb meatloaf and Crepe dessert. The meal was quite rich. Have to go back to try the Duck goulash. It is a reasonable deal but I generally don't eat so much, especially for dinner.

They start Sat/Sun brunch on Sept 7th. Gonna have to try that.
