He's probably asleep, since it's about 4 a.m. in Australia. But yes, he is the expert.

Thanks to all for the help. I found this thread showing your beautfiul EGs, Manton. At post #12, Harrydog shows his John Lobb Brooklands. I called John Lobb in NY (I'm in NJ), and they actually still have a few of these. They are sending me the only black left in my size down to me. It was definitely more than I felt like spending today, especially on a RTW, but I really like the look, and I hope it can fit my need. Will post when they arrive (should be tomorrow or Wedsnesday).

Wow, beautiful. I can't wait. They had 1 black (already on its way) and 1 in "museum red" (IIRC), on which I have placed a hold (pending the blacks fitting nicely).

Apologies for the hijack, but as the attention of those with balmoral boot knowledge has been gained, does anyone know of anywhere I'd have a chance of getting a pair of UK9 black balmorals for $250 -$300?

You could try the Natural Shoe Store which sells Grenson balmoral boots

http://www.thenaturalshoestore.com/i...c&cat=1&sec=36

I bought a pair a few months ago and I was intending to wear them at Royal Ascot, but the leather was still quite stiff and uncomfortable so I decided not to wear them. The boots look a bit "clumpy" in the image above but there are better images here. http://askandyaboutclothes.com/forum...ad.php?t=77017 Also some discussion here http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/f...=balmoral+boot

Lastly, try these guys in Denmark for the C&J Avebury http://www.mandbgents.com/nyhetsbrev.../Avebury-L.jpg

Best of luck.

Is it me, or has the M & B site been taken over by malware?

the only gripe about the brookland (and lot of similar styled lobbs) are the acute outer corners made by the seam around the eyelet. i wished it was more blunt or styled like an adelaide

The Brooklands is my favorite bal boot, and one that I hope to own someday. I hope it works out for you. I look forward to seeing the pics.

I think Manton and others have already answered everything better than I could. I'm glad the OP managed to track down a pair of Brooklands. They are a fine pair of Oxford boots (although they aren't strictly Balmoral boots).

For general interest, I should also mention that JM Weston offer Balmoral boots in a semi-brogue version. Also G&G now offer them in a new model called the Canterbury. My current thoughts however are that versions with matching leather uppers are a tad less formal. The more formal option is to have a lighter coloured contrasting cloth or leather above the Balmoral seam. A grey coloured upper is the most traditional.

I find brown Oxford boots to look too much like country styled casual footwear, unless they have contrasting uppers.

The G&G boot is also MTO only, however.
