Yeah. Started with a trucker, eventually decided on doing a barnstormer jacket like East West Musical Instruments.

Wait, you're getting a East West styled jacket? That's awesome. Any photos or drawings to show what it might look like?

The six pocket?

Pictures definitely needed... My next leather jacket will be a CCP Scarstitch, but the East West Musical Instruments hippie (6 pocket) jacket in blue would be excellent.

Hey dudes,

So I saw this jacket a while back from another user on here, made by Aero. Love the configuration (buco style collar, x-shaped pockets, small gauge zippers) but ideally I'd like it made in a heavy calfskin which Aero doesn't use. Any suggestions or am I shit out of luck?

Can you be more specific about the type of leather you're looking for? Are you looking for something that's thick but also soft? Aero has steerhide that's gorgeous, what weight are you looking for? Smooth or grainy?

Something with a smooth/tight grain, matte or with a mild shine. Heavy enough so it rolls/creases rather than drapey, maybe about 3oz? Not too experienced with garment leather weights.

These should give you a good idea, cheers

I would ask Aero to send you swatches of the Vincenza HH, which is similar to what you've described, but not calf. The steerhide is heavier, with a pretty deep grain. They are constantly bringing in new leathers and are a huge customer of Horween so you never know that they might have on hand. I would open up communication with them, they are constantly updated their leather offerings.

In HH, they have multiple options, of varying weights and softness. I have one in jerky HH which is lighter and more supple than the CXL but develops beautifully. Your best bet would be to get everything they have in black and handle them yourself.

Thanks for the info. That Aero is in Vincenza and I think you can request it in a light grain, I'll probably go for that if I can't find an alternative but I figure I'd ask.

Do you know of anywhere else that might be able to do something similar? I came across Johnson's leather after some searching, apparently they do a lot of custom work. Not sure how much of an issue pattern work etc would be.

Any alternatives? Also, why is shearling so expensive? Certainly not because of scarcity of raw material (which is the case of shell cordovan for example). Is the tanning process very complicated?

Thanks Chris, for your earlier suggestion on getting aero to send out some leather samples.
I sent them an email requesting the Vicenza, goatskin and jerky HH like you suggested.
They replied almost immediately and I'm waiting for the samples now.
Looking forward to it.

By the way, just a question on fit... what length do you recommend I wear a cafe racer? Seems most people wear it only just covering the belt?

My horsehide type 1 jacket at 2 months

Thank you, not my size though (48). :(

Also I'd prefer if it was more "typical shearling", i.e. that the actual fur was visible at least in the collar. Also leaning towards a grey/beige colour, really like these two but they're from old seasons (Tomas Maier and Burberry).

Found this Christ Leather (German brand) but unsure about the fit (looking for a slim fit)

It seems they were in the latest Pitti Uomo, has anyone seen their stuff in person?

For me I prefer the zipper to end by the top of my belt line and then the leather that falls below that can extend down a little further. (In a J-100 style like the Aero Board Racer or other J-100 reproductions)
Historically, the length on these jackets changed from decade to decade. In the late 40s they were pretty short, but by the 60s they were being made much longer, so you see examples running to both extremes, even from Buco. Below are three J-100 types, a Himel Kensington in steerhide, then the master himself wearing his own jacket in white with navy stripes, and finally me in an Aero goatskin Board Racer. Mine just extends over the belt but looks shorter because of the shirt hanging down.
