Shearling technically has to be from a sheep / lamb that has been shorn just one time, and thus they have to be over a year old. Tanning is not overly complicated but because it's a by-product of the meat industry no one is raising sheep to make jackets. (The wool industry is obviously a separate market) Some skins go to shearling but others just to regular sheepskin, so there is competition between those two markets. In recent years, the popularity of Uggs has created a rise in prices for the raw product. Finally, Shearling jackets are typically difficult to sew and are left to the top artisans in their respective factories.

Aero also offer a Tumbled (sometimes referred to as antique) FQHH. Its a slightly thinner (but not quite down to the Vicenza level, which is still pretty thick anyway) but has already been tumbled or slightly broken in.

Personally I don't like Aeros Mid Weight options apart from the Vicenza. The leather is just a little boring.

Also in my experience the Aero Steer, while pretty much the same thickness (some feel its a touch heavier) breaks in quicker and loses its stiffness MUCH quicker than the Horse.

Your best bet is to ask for some samples. My first Vicenza jacket is still a little stiff, yet my second was soft and supple out of the box....the batches do change a bit.

Great that you mention it, I was just wondering about what their tumbled HH is like.
Thanks for that suggestion regarding the samples. That certainly seems like a good idea. I'll send them an email.

Matthew Miller - Boiled cow

all of those leather pulls on the zippers look ridiculous
post #15384 of 16653

They're grosgrain. And yeah, even though it's apparently a "signature" feature for Miller's jackets, I agree. They're not near as obnoxious in person, but that's only because they're really obnoxious in product shots.

First thing I'll do when I eventually grab one of these will be cut the pull tabs and either just leave them off or try to punch some snaps into them so that I can make them removable.

I think the Margiela jacket above is uglier. But I see it got a few likes so what do I know.
