Just wear the hell out of it.

Don't do anything, just follow the advice above. If you put something on it now it would mainly just sit on the surface anyway.

Also how many leathers do you own? Seems like you keep grabbing leather jackets.

Honestly, probably too many.  On the other hand, they have allowed me to do product development and styling, because I'm also a huge nerd.

I need help choosing a leather jacket. I'm from Canada and the exchange rate atm is horribly unfelicitous. I want to spend around $700 CAD.

Incidentally, what are your opinions on these coats by M0851?

I really like this one in particular:

Are there other, cheaper options around in this vein?

This is quite lovely too:

It's a bit dangerous buying a jacket sight unseen I feel, though.

Advice, comments?

I want something minimal, tailored fit, smooth looking leather.

Falcon Garments would be almost doubling his budget.

With the dollar so bad Canadian options become way more appealing, assuming there are cool options available. I don't know M0851. Slightly higher end Danier?

Anyway, my advice is with the dollar down you have to rely or better sales when buying with US$. Which at least gives you a bunch of time to research some stuff, figure out what you love.

A fellow Canadian who understands $500 USD = $700 CAD. How are you reconciling your fashion needs against this infelicitous situation?

M0851 is a Montreal company that makes these lovely jackets from Aniline leather. It's thick, kind of stiff, but really supple leather that's quite tailored. Pricy though. I don't think I like the idea of trusting a mtm international purchase for that kind of money. Perhaps I will have to wait for a local sale.

And M0851 vs. Danier...I don't think you can compare them. Perhaps have a cursory look at reviews.

I'm just buying a lot less right now. Less experiments, and the like.

Cool to hear about M0851. I'll make sure to check them out if I'm ever nearby.

I remember when M0851 took on it's unfortunate name.  Some market research guys should be serving 15 to life that that.

Anyway, the jackets can be okay.  They are best known for their bafgs.  They are all over Canada - last time I took a look was in Vancouver.  For me, the Aero has a lot more character.  I'm just not sure that the minimalist lite style of M0851 translates that well into jackets.  I would say to look at Falcon, or maybe the Luxire jackets that I've been helping to develop.  In the price range you are looking at, and for a pared down, modern version of classic jackets, I say that that's a good bet.

Crappy name, cool jackets. I can't risk buying a mtm item for $1000+. I'll remember the alternatives you suggested If I get a chance in person. I can wait.

Agree that some of the M0851 stuff can be OK. A lot of their leathers are coated in a specific way, so if you're near a store, you might want to go in to try stuff on in person. It's hard to convey that finish online. Some of the aged leathers I've seen from them have this interesting crinkly effect. IMO, it's a slightly different look than the Falcon stuff.
