uh...margiela has been gone for like.....a long ass time now, bro. they still keep churnin' it out year after year. if you like it, you like it. if you don't, you don't. people are paying more for the style than for the quality in the first place.

+1

Hasn't Margiela been gone for like 10 years now? Really seems like it. Plus didn't he stopped being involved in the mens line even before he left?

I haven't handled the recent 5-zips but I don't think it'll really be that bad of a quality, really can't be as bad as the recent ROs I've handled and those tend to cost $1k more. I agree that if you like the style and it fits how you like, then just get it.

Sinnedk, you even said you "love" it so I think it is safe to get something you like especially since you seem to be looking for a leather jacket for a while now.

yea you are right i do love the look, the quality makes me question it, i've been looking semi-seriously for a few months, i always start doing research way before i buy, atm i ordered a TOJ moto, it felt like more of something i want/need right now,

i also really like incarnation/julius and some RO but ro has questionable quality due ti some reading on SF, i personally want to try some on so i'll be popping into barneys and archive for the previously mentioned brands

I really do not think quality will be that bad, can anyone confirm if they pretty much use the same leather for the 5-zip that they use on the $500-$700 Diesel jackets?

I haven't compared the cut in detail but the old one fits me in a 44/34 (what I got, from 2006) and it ends up being a closer fit at the right places where the new ones is more tubular, fits tighter in the shoulders (so I need a 46) and ends up being less interesting and baggy where it shouldn't. YMMV.

What I am getting from your description of the new one is that it is a bit more boxy or cut straight through the body even though the shoulder is tighter than the older one?

Hmmm, looks like I might have to try this on in person.

It's the opposite. According to drew his has like a 4 inch drop, my 5-zip has I think a 10 inch drop (although his is I think a 36 and mine a 40 but still, you can extrapolate). I haven't tried an OG 5-zip so I can't directly compare how it fits otherwise, but from all accounts the OG 5-zip fits 'boxier.' It's meant to be kinda skintight throughout (the new one is) which is why on most people it doesn't really look as good, it also seems to have too severe a drop for a lot of people to wear. Honestly I think mine may only look good because it's denim so it sticks out from the shoulders more than leather would.

Bear in mind that most of the bad 5-zip fits I've seen were guys in chinos with a slight gut who got an ugly wash 70% off on Mr Porter or yoox.
MMM men's started in like 2005 and MMM in 89, this should tell you where the focus was anyway. AFAIK MMM never had much input in the men's stuff, I know of two designers who were the main ones and they weren't him. He still got involved in the men's shows though so I am sure he did bring something to the men's collection, right up to his departure. Anyway I like what the MMM team does (well a part of it) and while the quality of the output has lowered I still found things I liked in the last collection.

+1, new MMM gets too much hate here although there is quite a bit of crap. I still think the shoes/sneakers are some of the best around once they're 50% off and there's still several things from each collection I'd wear if they didn't cost a billion dollars. His line was such that it doesn't have to be innovative every season.

i hope so, i just wish MMM would explain a bit more about the leather used, the description on most sites says is black leather w/distressed details...

As opposed to all these other fashion companies who give precise specs for all their items, especially their leather jackets?

Here is how you do it:
1) go to store or order from someplace with good return policy
2) Try several sizes
3) See if one fits and you like it and keep that or return everything
4) Joy!!

If you're looking for an old one then it will require more work, that's for sure.

I would love to do that, order different sizes and try them all and return the ones that doesn't work but I've only found one place with a 36 in the US and the only place I found with a 34 (and it isn't even the color/leather I want) is in Canada and returning it would be more hassle than I'd like (with the customs going back and forth, etc...).

I was answering sinnedk, being a 44 or 46 is a ***** and you'll have a hard time trying many jackets and leathers. I know Y! always has a few but they're usually expensive and no return.

They have the 44 outside of the US at most MMM shops I (very infrequently) visit. Just go traveling someday and try them on then.

In Europe they have very few 44s, maybe 1 in the major MMM shops but if you wait a few days they can usually have one come from another location or whatever, in asia I guess all bets are off but I wouldn't know, I only go to like Hermès and LV there cause its hilarious.
