The upcoming seasons calf stooges is the best I've seen in a while that isn't oiled calf (doesn't look like oiled calf), just looks so thick and robust. Not sure how it differs from the other stooges but Forward calls it "Cowboy Stooges"?

Thoughts on this Rick Owens?

Leather quality appears to be very high, but no RO stores near me. :(

Interesting mix of cashmere.

You're $5k is best spent somewhere else.

You come off as wanting a rick owens leather because its a rick owens leather. Sure you want a nice, "quality" rick owens jacket, but honestly if you are spending a grand on an item don't you think it makes some sense to really hone in on a design that you really love and then do some research to figure out the best iteration or wait for it to be produced? Let alone 5 grand.

Besides haven't the last several pages going back to when rfx45 first posted FW14 leathers to more recently pretty much given you an answer. The thick stooges looks money and far superior to the cashmere lined one and is probably cheaper.

Do some searching on sz and here and superfuture about rick leathers and most previous iterations that are great aren't that hard to hone in on. Fundamentally it seems flawed to seek even the slightest amount of validation from others on a 5k purchase. You should KNOW with a 5k purchase... unless 5k means nothing to you then you might as well just buy a bunch of leathers and throw away the ones that you don't stay in love with.

It's 5k man. It's worth doing more research yourself. It might even be worth it to fly to a boutique and try shit out.

Excellent post and very well said. I'm not wanting a Rick Owens just because it's Rick Owens. I love several of the styles, but I was hoping to get an understanding of just how much variance there is in the quality. $5k is indeed a huge purchase and not one I'd ever make unless I was in love with the jacket, I was just hoping to hear "rick owens veterans" thoughts on it compared to previous seasons.

What really confuses me is the huge variance in RO leathers... some are well regarded and are in the $2.5k price range while some in the $5k range seem to be strongly disliked. Are the $5K ones "experimental/runway" offerings compared to the others?

I'll check out superfuture, but what is sz?

Your budget is 5k? Have you considered any other brands?
Well rfx's earlier post sums up the Rick situation pretty well

"Can't say quality since it seems there are good and bad quality every season (though dominated with bad quality than good)"

That's just how it is. Some designer brands get to the point where they can skimp on quality/durability and sell purely on brand and design while raising prices and who can really blame them for doing so? Rick/Margiela/YSL/Dior Homme and many, many others all fit that criteria. They all put out nice stuff, but there's still probably 10 shitty 5 zips for every really good one and the older ones are generally much nicer.

Everyone is raising prices.. even the "artisanal" brands that I favor and I can assure you quality is not following and thankfully in some cases not taking a hit. Not that Paul Harnden stuff is super durable and well made either per se. I'm glad I was never into bbs's stuff so his crazy prices don't affect me.

stylezeitgeist. pretty elitist, finnicky forum that will probably stomp all over you for asking questions and stuff, but a wealth of information to be mined via lurking.

edit: yeah reading 12 pages back there were several posts by folks that really give a good clear idea of the situation

They've always had some outrageously price pieces every season though, shearlings almost always start at $5k+, though last falls might have started at about $4k? And who could forget the $50k SSense gators.

Looking at current season stooges that retail at $2500, it does seem like quality is the big difference, it looks like plastic and I'll gladly pay an extra $500 to get the other one I posted.

I dono.

No RO is worth 5k. (and i like RO a lot)

Check Balmain, MA+, CCP just to compare. Of those CCP is the one that is worth 5k.

I like RO because you can get them for ~$800 on the secondhand market. I wouldn't pay more than a grand for Rick. If my budget was 5k I would look elsewhere
