Is that an Italian hide?  Can you make the new Aero Plainsman out of that hide?  Do you have a photo of the hide?

The double would be something new for me. I'm down to branch out a bit.

that shiny one was his custom leather?

ugly as fuck imo, sorry moo.

even if the craftsmanship is 100x better than toj, i'd still take my toj over that thing. the proportions, detailing, and basically the entire look of the jacket are just not my thing. i'm glad you like it though, and it does look like its very well made.

my toj is easily as nice as my ~$3500 ripvanwinkle leather

??? Its made from deer i believe and its very substantial. I tried it on (same day i was wearing my TOJ moto) and it was great. I think you are just hating because of the TOJ attack.

RE: TOJ, a 1/2 year - 1 year ago i would definitely recommend TOJ to anyone. Yes i am a fan, i have 2 products (moto and ma-1) and those are great. But, given the current situation of TOJ paying more attention to their restaurant while still taking orders, I would not recommend it. Why would i want to wait 1/2 a year when i can find a good custom shop that can get the job done in 2-3 months at a very similar price. Having said that, at the time when i was buying my TOJ they were doing great and there was no doubt in my mind i'd get a quality product. In fact, i don't doubt i'd get a good product now as well. But, waiting for the product 1/2 a year well thats another story. As Mike in breaking bad said "no half measures", can't run 2 business and only 1/2 pay attention to one.

RE: Johnson leathers, If i did not have the TOJ which fills my mtm need, I wouldn't hesitate going there. In fact, I originally wanted a mtm jacket from good wear leather but they were not taking orders. Hind sight i would not have been happy with this jacket (http://www.goodwearleather.com/pages/gwcalracer_images1.html) because of the cut which TOJ definitely has better than most places.

I have a toj, black calf. Hate it, never liked it from day one, and have never worn it. Never got the 'leather jacket' vibe out of it at all. I bought it custom back when they were $650. Wasn't a deal even then. It'll probably end up in the donation bin.

It definitely has its fans. I can and can't really see why.

Now, Moo's JL jacket I like.

Can you tell us why you dislike it rather than the generalized hatred?

ITT People are being dumb. There are subjective opinions being thrown around like objective facts. Stating your preference is one thing, making completely unfounded assertions is altogether different, and just makes you sound ignorant.

Cheers,

I'm interested, pending a few more details on leather used, details, etc.

Edit - DR only. Not into that moto

Would you be in for the veg tanned full grain horse? Just gonna state for the record that that will not come cheap.

what's the difference between the veg tanned and chrome tanned?

I think the worn in pics of that junya x vanson rider is pretty good, whichever leather that one is

Yes and no.

As Fok implies above, I can't give you objective facts on the leather. I'm not well versed enough in leather.

Then again, if I say "cheap, shiny, and something out of Macys" would I be stating anything less specific than what's been opined about Moo's jacket? No. And yet, cheap, shiny (minus Macys), and the silliness of the overly structured shoulders, among other things, is why I don't like it.

As for hatred, $650 was difficult to stomach. I'm still feeling the sting....

Tbh, in general, chrome tanned leather is more durable and weather resistant, so I'm now veering towards that, although good veg tanned leather has a depth of color that is difficult to replicate. One of my favorite belts is a veg tanned leather that looks spectacular as it has aged, and from the day I got it. But belts are not exposed to the elements that way jackets are.

not sure if you misunderstood my post, but i never said it didn't look like a high quality jacket, in fact i said the opposite. i just don't like the way it looks.

Curious, @LA Guy, what about Himel's leathers do you like better than ToJ? I've never handled a ToJ (although I have a few on order), but I've handled Himels. I agree, they're very nice. Is it mainly the weight and toughness of them that you like, or how they've been tanned?

yeah I have noticed my veggy tanned boots change colour differently when soaked with water than my other ones (which I assume are chrome tanned),

And the colour does look nice on whiskeys and natural colours, how much of a difference would that colour depth make for a black leather jacket though?

Yeah I think chrome tanned would be better for the rain from what I've seen with my boots, and it rains often enough here to be a factor
